스테눙순드 공장 생산라인에 하수처리수 사용…연간 11억 리터(1천100만㎥) 이상 물 절약 예정

재활용 물, ‘프로젝트 에어(Project Air)’ 통해 재생 가능한 수소 생산에도 사용

스웨덴의 지속가능한 솔루션 제공기업인 퍼스토프(Perstorp)는 스웨덴의 스테눙순드(Stenungsund)에서 생산 작업을 위해 인근 시립 하수처리장의 처리수를 사용할 수 있는 독특한 프로젝트에 투자하고 있다. 이것은 연간 11억 리터(1천100만㎥)의 신선한 물을 절약하기로 했다.

퍼스토프는 이 프로젝트를 통해 스테눙순드 공장의 향후 물 공급을 확보할 수 있다. 또한 유한물질 중립을 지향하는 회사의 장기적인 지속 가능성 야망에도 부합한다.

퍼스토프(Perstorp)의 안나 베르그렌(Anna Berggren) 지속가능성 부사장은 “이것은 퍼스토프의 핵심 기술의 중요한 발전이다”라면서 “우리는 물(담수) 소비량을 줄이기 위한 노력의 일환으로 앞으로 전 세계의 더 많은 지역에서 이같은 프로젝트를 구현할 계획이다. 담수 부족은 이미 전 세계적으로 사실이다. 화학산업은 사용을 줄이고 사회 전체를 지원할 수 있는 새로운 솔루션을 찾아야 할 책임이 있다”라고 말했다.

퍼스토프의 모든 생산공장은 화학 반응용 용매, 제품을 위한 운반체, 열 전달 매체 및 냉각과 같은 여러 공정에서 물을 사용한다. 담수 소비를 줄이는 한 가지 방법은 하수를 정화하고 재활용하는 것이다. 스테눙순드 프로젝트는 지자체가 운영하는 하수처리장의 처리수를 퍼스토프 옥소(Oxo) 생산 공장에서 추가로 정화하고 재사용할 수 있게 한다.

재활용된 물은 퍼스토프의 게임 체인처(game changer) 전환 프로젝트인 ‘프로젝트 에어(Project Air)’ 및 기타 전략적 투자를 위해 전기분해를 통해 재생 가능한 수소 생산에도 사용된다.

안나 베르그렌(Anna Berggren) 부사장은 “이 프로젝트는 비즈니스 성장과 지속가능한 개발을 결합하는 핵심 원동력이다”라고 강조했다.

‘프로젝트 에어(Project Air)’는 화학산업을 기후 중립으로 전환하기 위한 이니셔티브다. 퍼스토프 그룹(Perstorp Group)과 파트너인 유니퍼(Uniper)는 순환 생산방법을 사용하여 화학 제조를 위한 지속가능한 메탄올을 생산하여 연간 약 50만 톤의 이산화탄소 배출량을 줄이고 있다. 이는 화석연료로 운행되는 약 34만 대의 신차의 연간 배출량과 맞먹는다.

글로벌 기술 및 투자(Global Technology & Investment)의 안드레아스 어트불트(Andreas Utbult)는 “이 흥미진진한 수처리 및 재활용 프로젝트에는 스테눙순드 지역의 여러 파트너와 긴밀한 협력이 필요하다”라면서 “퍼스토프가 기술 전문지식을 사용하여 지속가능성 비전을 구체적인 투자로 전환하는 방법을 보여준 것”이라고 극찬했다.

Perstorp set to save more than one billion liters of fresh water yearly at Stenungsund plant

 

Sustainable solutions provider Perstorp is investing in a unique project that will allow it to use wastewater from a nearby municipal treatment plant for production operations in Stenungsund, Sweden. This will save 1.1 billion liters of fresh water per year.

The project will enable Perstorp to secure the future supply of water for the Stenungsund plant. It also fits with the company’s long term sustainability ambition to become Finite Material Neutral. 

“This is an important development of core technology for Perstorp,” says Anna Berggren, Vice President Sustainability. “We plan to implement it at more sites around the world in the future in our drive to reduce freshwater consumption. Fresh water scarcity is already a fact around the world. The chemical industry has a responsibility to reduce its use and find new solutions that can also support society as a whole.” 

All Perstorp production plants use water for multiple purposes: as a solvent for chemical reactions, a carrier for products, a heat-transfer medium, and for cooling, for example. One way of reducing consumption of fresh water is to purify and recycle wastewater. The Stenungsund project will enable wastewater from the water treatment plant run by the municipality to be further purified and reused at the Perstorp Oxo production plant. 

The recycled water will also be used for production of renewable hydrogen via electrolysis for Perstorp’s game changing transition project Project Air, as well as for other strategic investments. “This project is a key enabler to combining business growth and sustainable development,” says Berggren.  

Project Air is an initiative to transform the chemical industry towards climate neutrality. Perstorp Group and partner Uniper will produce sustainable methanol for chemical manufacturing using circular production methods, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 500,000 tonnes per year. This is equal to the annual emissions of around 340,000 new cars running on fossil fuel. 

Andreas Utbult, Global Technology & Investment, adds: “This exciting water treatment and recycling project will involve close collaboration with several partners in the Stenungsund region. It exemplifies how Perstorp uses its technology expertise to transfer a sustainability vision into concrete investments.”
