에지 컴퓨팅 센터와 다양한 프로세스·애플리케이션 지연시간 단축…고객에게 실질적인 이점 제공

스페인 산트 조안 데스피(Sant Joan Despi)에 있는 아이구스 데 바르셀로나(Aigues de Barcelona)의 정수처리시설(drinking water treatment plant ; DWTP)의 보안 카메라가 5G 기술로 서로 연결돼 수집된 영상을 텔레포니카(Telefonica)의 에지 컴퓨팅(edge computing)에서 실시간 처리할 수 있는 선구적인 프로젝트다.

이 파일럿(pilot)을 사용하면 프로세스와 인프라를 경제적 효율성으로 이끄는 보다 확장이 가능하고 유연하며 쉽게 구할 수 있는 모델로 변환할 뿐만 아니라 보다 간단한 작업이 수행된다.

아이구스 데 바르셀로나, 텔레포니카 및 모바일 월드 캐피탈 바로셀로나(Mobile World Capital Barcelona)는 산트 조안 데스피의 정수장(DWTP)의 보안 비디오 카메라 이동으로 구성된 시범 프로젝트를 수행했다. 이것은 바르셀로나의 메트로폴리탄 지역에서 사용할 수 있는 텔레포니카의 에지 컴퓨팅 노드에서 제공하는 클라우드 통합 모델이다.

지금까지 바르셀로나 아이구스의 DWTP에 설치된 카메라는 기존 고정 네트워크로 서로 연결돼 촬영된 영상이 시설 내에 위치한 로컬 서버로 전송됐다.

이 프로젝트 덕분에 보안 카메라가 수집한 영상은 인공지능(AI) 알고리즘을 이용해 클라우드에서 에지 컴퓨팅과 처리에 5G로 전송된다. 침입 감지 또는 제한된 지역에 대한 사람들의 접근은 항상 실시간으로 프로젝트의 주요 이점이다.

수집 프로세스와 후속 비디오 분석이 에지 컴퓨팅 노드로 마이그레이션(migrated)되기 위해서는 5G 모바일 네트워크의 두 가지 고유한 특성이 필요하다. 한편으로는 AI가 예상되는 결과를 얻으려면 이미지가 매우 높은 품질이어야 하므로 높은 업로드 대역폭을 보장해야 한다. 반면에 이벤트는 실시간으로 감지되어야 하므로 최소 지연 시간 조건으로 연결이 제공되어야 한다.

아이구스 데 바르셀로나(Aigues de Barcelona)의 혁신디렉터인 카탈리나 발세이로(Catalina Balseiro)는 “5G 기술을 사용하여 텔레포니카의 에지 컴퓨팅과 같은 가까운 클라우드 환경을 갖추면 중요한 시설에서 보안 작업을 최적화하고 순환성에 기여하여 물리적 하드웨어와 이동을 줄일 수 있다”로 말했다.

텔레포니카의 혁신관리자인 레오노르 오스토스(Leonor Ostos)는 “고객과 함께 일하는 이 조종사는 5G 모바일 네트워크와 같은 고성능 무선 네트워크를 보유할 수 있는 기회와 이점을 강조하면서 이는 에지 컴퓨팅 센터와 연계하여 광범위한 낮은 대기 시간 프로세스와 애플리케이션을 가능하게 하며, 고객에게 가시적인 이점을 제공한다”고 말했다. 

그는 특히 “이 파일럿은 텔레포니카가 ‘모바일 월드 콩그레스 2023(Mobile World Congress 2023)’에서 시연할 몇 가지 데모의 일부가 될 5G 및 에지 컴퓨팅의 실제 응용 프로그램 샘플”이라고 강조했다. 

모바일 월드 캐피탈 바로셀로나(Mobile World Capital Barcelona)의 CIO(최고정보관리책임자) 겸 지능형 연결(Intelligent Connectivity) 이사인 에두아르드 마틴(Eduard Martin)은 “이 파일럿은 모바일 월드 캐피털에서 우리가 추진하고 있는 프로젝트 유형을 보여준다”라면서 “사용 사례를 허용하는 기술 및 개념 테스트를 넘어 실제 스토리지 잠재력을 활용하기 위해 5G와 에지 컴퓨팅의 조합을 구현해야 한다”고 역설했다.

마틴 이사는 이어 “이 파일럿 테스트를 통해 우리는 데이터가 AI에 의해 로컬로 관리될 수 있도록 더욱 권한을 부여하여 응답 시간을 최소화한다”라면서 “이 프로젝트는 여러 산업에 적용될 수 있는 이러한 유형의 중요한 인프라를 관리하는 데 필요한 네트워크 특성을 테스트한다”고 덧붙였다.

Telefonica optimizes the Aigues de Barcelona plant thanks to 5G

 

This is a pioneering project through which the security cameras of the drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) of Aigues de Barcelona in Sant Joan Despi have been connected to each other with 5G technology so that the images collected can be processed in real time in Telefonica's edge computing.

With this pilot, simpler operations are achieved, as well as transforming processes and infrastructures to more scalable, flexible and easily evolvable models that lead to economic efficiencies.

Aigues de Barcelona, Telefonica and Mobile World Capital Barcelona have carried out a pilot project consisting of the migration of the security video cameras of the drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) of Sant Joan Despi. This is a cloud integration model provided by Telefonica’s edge computing node, available for the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona.

Until now, the cameras installed in the DWTP of Aigues de Barcelona were connected to each other by conventional fixed networks, so that the captured images were sent to a local server located within the facility. 

Thanks to this project, the images collected by the security cameras are sent with 5G to edge computing and processed in the cloud using Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms. The detection of intrusions or the access of people to restricted areas always in real time is the main benefit of the project.

For the collection process and subsequent video analytics to be migrated to the edge computing node, two inherent characteristics of the 5G mobile network are required. On the one hand, ensuring high upload bandwidth, as the images must be of very high quality for the AI to obtain the expected results. On the other hand, connectivity must be provided with minimum latency conditions, since events must be detected in real time.

According to Aigues de Barcelona’s innovation director, Catalina Balseiro, “having close cloud environments such as Telefonica’s edge computing together with the use of 5G technology allows us to optimize security tasks in critical facilities and contribute to circularity, thus reducing physical hardware and travel”.

Leonor Ostos, Innovation Manager at Telefonica, says: “These pilots, in which we work hand in hand with our customers, highlight the opportunities and advantages of having high-performance wireless networks such as the 5G mobile network. This, in conjunction with edge computing centers, enables a wide range of low-latency processes and applications, and provides tangible benefits for our customers. This pilot is a sample of the real applications of 5G and edge computing, technologies that will be part of several of the demonstrations that Telefonica will bring to its stand at Mobile World Congress 2023”.

Eduard Martin, CIO and Director of Intelligent Connectivity at Mobile World Capital Barcelona, says: “This pilot exemplifies the type of project that we at Mobile World Capital Barcelona are looking to promote: beyond the technical and concept tests that the use cases allow, it is necessary to start implementing the combination of 5G with edge computing to take advantage of its real storage potential. With this pilot test we further empower that data can be managed by an AI locally, minimizing response time.” Martin adds that the project “tests the network characteristics needed to manage this type of critical infrastructure, which can be extrapolated to multiple industries”.
