플라스틱과 섬유 수명 개선을 위한 생물학적 기술 개발 및 산업화 분야의 선구자 카비오스(Carbios: 파리 유로넥스트 그로스: ALCRB)는 PVH와 계약을 체결하고 온(On), 파타고니아(Patagonia), 푸마(PUMA), 살로몬(Salomon)과 공동 설립한 섬유-투-섬유(fiber-to-fiber) 컨소시엄에 영입했다. 섬유 산업의 순환 경제 전환 가속을 서약한 카비오스/온/파타고니아/푸마/PVH/살로몬은 카비오스의 획기적인 생물학적 재활용 기술을 자체 제품에 테스트하고 향상하기 위해 협력하게 된다. 궁극적 목표는 컨소시엄의 지속 가능성 공약에 따라 카비오스 바이오 재활용 공정의 섬유-대-섬유 폐쇄 순환을 산업 차원에서 입증하는 것이다.

앞으로 2년간 카비오스와 제휴 업체는 복잡한 섬유 폐기물의 철저한 분류 및 해체 기술과 더불어 폴리에스터 품목의 대규모 생물학적 재활용을 위해 협력하게 된다. PVH는 회원들의 만장일치로 컨소시엄에 합류했다: 컨소시엄의 목표는 기후 변화에 대응하여 실행 가능한 패션 산업의 솔루션 개발을 지원하는 것이며 PVH는 프로젝트 범위를 한층 확대할 것으로 기대된다.

카비오스는 고도 선별 효소로 혼합 원자재를 재활용하고 지속 가능한 기술을 개발함으로써 현재의 열기계적 재활용 방법에 필요한 분류를 크게 줄였다. 카비오스가 특허 취득한 효소는 혼합 섬유 조직의 내부에서 발견되는 PET 폴리에스터에만 작용한다. 이러한 혁신 공정은 버진 PET와 동등한 품질의 재활용 PET(r-PET)를 만들어 새로운 섬유 조직 생산에 활용할 수 있으므로 섬유 산업에 중요한 돌파구가 될 것이다.

현재 전 세계 섬유 폐기물의 13%만이 재활용되고 있으며 패딩, 단열재, 헝겊 등 저급 활용이 대부분이다 나머지 87%는 매립 또는 소각 대상이다. 섬유 재활용 기술 개선을 위해 컨소시엄은 의류, 내의, 신발과 운동복 형태로 원자재를 제공하게 된다. 2023년에는 특히 유럽 연합이 공동으로 자금 지원하는 ‘PET 수명 주기’ 프로젝트를 통해 카비오스의 시범 시설에서 섬유 PET 폐기물을 위한 새로운 라인이 가동될 예정이다. 이는 2025년 1월 1일부터 유럽에서 의무화되는 섬유 폐기물 분리 수거 등 향후 규정에 대비한 조치이다.

섬유와 직물을 생산하는 오늘날의 섬유 산업은 재생 불가능 자원에 크게 의존하고 일부 재활용 폴리에스터 섬유는 재활용 PET 병에 의존하고 있는 현실이다. 하지만 PET 병은 식음료 산업에서 재활용될 예정이므로 공급이 부족해진다. 순환 경제에서 직물 생산에 사용되는 재료는 회생 과정을 통해 공급되는 재활용 또는 재생 소재이다. 일단 원자재가 확보되면 카비오스의 바이오 재활용 공정을 통해 생산된 r-PET 섬유로 신제품을 제작하는 것이 컨소시엄의 목표이다.

“카비오스와 컨소시엄 회원은 공약 실천을 위해 재생 소재 활용도가 높은 컬렉션을 선보이고 있다”고 타미 힐피거 글로벌 & PVH 유럽(Tommy Hilfiger Global and PVH Europe)의 지속 가능 비즈니스 및 혁신 담당 EVP 인 에스더 베르부르크(Esther Verburg)가 설명하고 “패션 발전에 기여하는 새로운 솔루션으로서 카비오스의 효소 재활용 기술 개발을 지원하게 되어 매우 기쁘다”고 덧붙였다.

Leading fashion company joins fiber-to-fiber consortium founded by Carbios, On, Patagonia, PUMA and Salomon

The consortium welcomes PVH Corp. to leverage the partnership and support the industrial scale development of Carbios’ unique biorecycling process, setting new global standards for textile recycling technologies

Carbios (Euronext Growth Paris: ALCRB), a pioneer in the development and industrialization of biological technologies for reinventing the life cycle of plastics and textiles, has signed an agreement with PVH Corp., to join its fiber-to-fiber consortium founded with On, Patagonia, PUMA, and Salomon[1]. Committed to accelerating the transition of the textile industry toward a circular economy. Carbios, On, Patagonia, PUMA, PVH Corp., and Salomon collaborate to test and enhance Carbios’ breakthrough biological recycling technology on their own products. The ultimate aim is to prove fiber-to-fiber closed circularity using Carbios’ biorecycling process at an industrial scale in support of the Consortium members’ ambitious sustainability commitments.

During the two-year collaboration, Carbios and its partners collaborate to deliver the biological recycling of polyester items at industrial-scale, including thorough sorting and dismantling technologies for complex textile waste. The existing members voted unanimously for PVH Corp. to join the Consortium stating : “The aim of our consortium is to support the development of actionable solutions that address the fashion industry’s contribution to climate change and PVH Corp. can bring a broader perspective to the project, which is always welcome.”

Carbios has developed a unique and sustainable technology using highly selective enzymes that can recycle blended feedstocks, therefore reducing extensive sorting required by current thermomechanical recycling methods. For mixed fiber textile materials, Carbios’ patented enzyme acts solely on the PET polyester found within. This innovative process creates recycled PET (r-PET), equivalent in quality to virgin PET, that can be used to produce new textile fibers: a major breakthrough for the textile industry.

Treatment of textile waste and recycling

Globally, only 13% of textile waste is currently recycled and mainly in lower quality applications such as padding, insulation or rags[2]. The remaining 87% is destined for landfill or incineration. In order to work on improving textile recycling technologies, Consortium members will supply feedstock in the form of apparel, underwear, footwear and sportswear. In 2023, a new line for textile PET waste will be operational at Carbios’ demonstration facility via notably the “LIFE Cycle of PET” project co-funded by the European Union. This comes in anticipation of future regulations, such as the separate collection of textile waste to be made mandatory in Europe from 1 January 2025.

Fiber-to-fiber : circularity of textiles

To produce fibers and fabrics, today’s textile industry largely relies on non-renewable resources, and in part on recycled PET bottles for recycled polyester fiber. This resource, however, will become scarce as PET bottles will be destined exclusively to produce new bottles within the Food & Beverage Industry. In a circular economy, the materials used to produce textiles are sourced from recycled or renewable feedstocks produced through regenerative practices. As well as supplying feedstock for the demonstrator, Consortium members aim to create new products from Carbios’ r-PET fibers produced using its biorecycling process.
