수돗물의 누수를 찾기 위해 딥 러닝(deep-learning)을 사용하는 세계적인 정보기술 회사인 영국의 피도테크(FIDO Tech)는 마이크로소프트(Microsoft)와 계약을 체결하여 물에 대한 긍정적인 약속에 맞서 진전을 이룰 수 있도록 지원을 하고있다. 

마이크로소프트와의 새로운 협정은 피도테크(FIDO Tech)가 가장 중요한 물의 긍정적인 약속의 일부인 물 보충 목표에 맞서 진전을 이룰 수 있도록 돕고 있다.

최초의 보충 프로젝트에서 피도테크의 기술은 실행 가능한 인공 지능(AI)의 힘을 통해 수돗물의 손실을 줄이기 위해 런던과 템즈워터(Thames Water)가 관리하는 지역에 배치되었다.

템즈워터는 영국 런던에서 2025년까지 전체 누수율을 20%로 줄이고 2050년까지 누수율을 절반으로 줄이겠다고 이미 약속했지만, 전 세계적으로 수도관에서 손실되는 평균 물의 양은 훨씬 많다.

세계은행(World Bank)에 따르면, 전 세계 평균적으로 전 세계 수도관 물의 30%가 소비자에게 도달하기 전에 손실되며, 이 중 대부분은 누수와 도난으로 인한 것으로 추정하고 있다. 개발도상국에서는 매일 약 4천500만㎥의 물이 손실되며 연간 30억 달러(약 3조9천700억 원)가 넘는다.

물 손실을 수정하는 것은 수량화 가능한 방식으로 지역 유역에 즉각적인 영향을 미치면서 물 가용성에 긍정적인 영향을 미친다. 소비자들이 더 많은 물을 이용할 수 있게 하고 수원에 대한 압력을 완화할 뿐만 아니라, 물을 덜 필요하므로 에너지 발자국(energy footprint)을 줄일 수 있다.

마이크로소프트(Microsoft)의 지속 가능성 최고 책임자(Chief Sustainability Officer ; CSO)인 멜라니 나카가와(Melanie Nakagawa)는 “누수로 인해 손실되는 비수익 물, 즉 담수의 전 세계 양은 하루에 3억4천600만㎥로 추정되며, 이는 전 세계 물 시스템 투입량의 30%에 해당한다”고 말했다. 

멜라니 나카가와 CSO는 이어 “물 데이터와 새로운 인공지능(AI) 기반 도구는 이 문제를 해결하는 데 도움이 될 수 있으며 누출 감지와 같은 물 솔루션에 엄청난 영향을 미칠 수 있다”고 덧붙였다. 

멜라니 나카가와 CSO는 특히 “런던에서 FIDO테크와 함께 진행하는 이 최초의 누수 감지 기술 보충 프로젝트(first-of-its-kind leak detection technology replenishment project)는 FIDO의 AI 지원 음향 누출 분석을 활용하여 런던의 노후화된 공급망에서 누수로 손실되는 물을 줄일 것이며 연간 수백만㎥의 물을 절약할 것으로 예상된다”고 강조했다.

피도테크는 이미 영국 전역에서 여러차례 성공을 거두었다. 이 회사는 2021년부터 템즈워터와 협력해 왓으며, 노섬브리아 워터(Northumbrian Water)와도 협력하여 15개 할당된 구역 계량 영역(DMAs ; district metering areas)에서 누출을 37%까지 줄였다.

템즈워터(Thames Water)의 네빌 먼캐스터(Nevil Muncaster) 런던 운영이사는 “누수의 95%는 지하에 있으며 눈에 보이지 않는다. 그렇기 때문에 FIDO의 AI와 같은 혁신적인 방법을 사용하는 것이 매우 중요하다”고 말했다.

네빌 먼캐스터 이사는 이어 “우리는 런던과 우리 지역 전체의 누수를 발견하고 해결하기 위해 노력하고 있지만, 수도는 더 시끄럽고 바쁜 도로를 포함하여 더 까다롭게 만드는 과제도 제시하고 있다”고 덧붙였다. 

그는 특히 “누수관리의 선두에 서려고 노력하고 있으며 마이크로소프트 및 피도테크와 파트너 관계를 맺음에 따라 이 첨단 기술을 채택하고 투자함으로써 이 문제를 극복하고 프로세스에서 소중한 수자원을 보호할 수 있다”라면서 “매주 1천300건 이상의 수리 작업을 수행하고 있는데, 이는 7.5분에 한 건꼴이다”라고 강조했다.

LONDON (UK) - A new agreement with Microsoft is helping the technology company make progress against its water replenishment goal, part of its overarching water positive commitment.

In a first-of-its-kind replenishment project, FIDO’s technology has been deployed in London and across the Thames Water region to reduce water network losses through the power of actionable AI.

London’s water utility Thames Water has already committed to reduce its overall leakage to 20% by 2025 and to halve leakage by 2050, but the average amount of water lost to pipeline networks globally is much higher.

The World Bank estimates that as a global average, 30% of the world’s piped water is lost before it reaches the customer, most of it due to leaks and theft. In developing nations, roughly 45 million cubic metres of water are lost daily, worth over $3 billion per year.

Fixing water losses positively impacts water availability with immediate impact across local watersheds in a quantifiable way. As well as making more water available to consumers and easing pressure on water sources, it also means less water needs treating, reducing a utility’s energy footprint.

FIDO is one of the sector’s most sophisticated AI solutions, with the unique distinction of being able to identify leaks and, most importantly, rank them by size, even in the noisiest networks, and regardless of pipe material or condition.

In 2020 Microsoft pledged to be water positive by 2030. This commitment is made up of five key pillars: reducing water use, replenishing water sources, providing people with access to water and sanitation services, advocating for effective water policy and driving innovation and data digitization.

Melanie Nakagawa, Chief Sustainability Officer at Microsoft, said: “The global volume of non-revenue water, or freshwater that is lost due to leaks, is estimated to be 346 million cubic metres per day, amounting to 30% of water system input volumes across the world.”

“Water data and new AI-powered tools can help address this challenge and have a tremendous impact on water solutions like leak detection. This first-of-its-kind leak detection technology replenishment project in London with FIDO Tech will reduce water lost to leakage in London’s aging distribution network, leveraging FIDO’s AI-enabled acoustic leak analysis and is expected to save millions of cubic metres of water per year.”

FIDO has already seen multiple successes across the UK. The company has been working with Thames Water since 2021 and has partnered with Northumbrian Water to reduce leakage by 37% across 15 assigned district metering areas (DMAs).
