[네덜란드] 로얄 해스코닝DHV, 아일랜드 링센드 하수처리장에 Ephyra® 슬러지 기술 도입

시설 확장 최소화해 슬러지 처리 능력 향상 기대

혐기성 소화조 성능을 최적화하기 위한 혁신적인 슬러지 소화 기술인 Ephyra는 더블린에 있는 아일랜드 국영 물 유틸리티 회사인 우이스 에이런(Uisce Éireann)의 링센드(Ringsend) 하수처리장(WWTP)에 도입됐다. Ephyra는 현재의 슬러지 처리 시설을 크게 확장하지 않고도 더블린의 슬러지 처리 능력을 크게 향상시킬 것으로 기대된다.

현재 링센드 하수처리장은 하수처리 용량을 늘리기 위해 대대적인 업그레이드를 진행하고 있다. 단계적으로 시행되고 있는 이 프로젝트는 도시 하수처리 지침의 기준을 충족하면서 240만 명 인구(PE)의 하수처리를 가능하게 할 것이다. 이러한 현저한 증가를 수용하려면 기존 슬러지 라인을 확장하고 업그레이드해야 하며, 이미 매우 혼잡한 시설 내에 제한된 추가 건물 설치 공간만을 한정적으로 사용할 수 있다.

Ephyra 기술을 사용하면 기존 소화조를 개조해 새로운 소화 탱크 없이도 용량을 늘릴 수 있다. 이를 통해 상당한 비용 절감을 하면서 바이오가스 형태로 지속가능한 에너지를 생산할 것이다.

진 홉스(Jean Hobbs) 우이스 에이런의 수석 프로그램 관리자는 “이 시설에서 처리되는 모든 아일랜드 하수의 40%는 환경을 보호하고 성능을 저하시키지 않으면서 용량을 늘려야 한다"라며, "이러한 규모의 프로젝트를 수행하는 것은 매우 복잡하고 해결해될 과제가 많다. 특히, 업그레이드 작업 전반에 걸쳐 처리장의 정상적인 운영을 유지해야 하는 필요성이 있으며, 강력한 슬러지 처리 또한 갖춰야 한다. 우리는 앞으로 수년간 더블린 지역의 회복력을 더욱 향상시킬 이 필수적인 프로젝트의 제공에 있어 이러한 추가적인 발전을 환영한다"라고 말했다.

그는 이어서 “링센드는 한 세기 이상 더블린의 하수를 처리해 왔으며, 아일랜드에서 가장 큰 하수처리장이다. 우리는 프로젝트 팀, 계약자 및 지역 당국 파트너의 협력과 지원 덕분에 매우 좋은 진전을 이루고 있다. 그리고 우리는 더블린 광역 지역에 거주하는 모든 사람들의 이익을 위해 이 중요한 인프라 부분을 제 시간과 예산에 맞춰 제공할 수 있는 궤도에 올랐다고 확신한다"라고 덧붙였다.

Royal HaskoningDHV’s innovative digestion technology, Ephyra®, has been introduced at Uisce Éireann's Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Dublin. This project will significantly boost Dublin's sludge treatment capacity without requiring significant expansion of current facilities.

 

Ephyra, the innovative sludge digestion technology for optimising anaerobic digester performance, has been introduced at Uisce Éireann's Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Dublin. Ephyra will significantly boost Dublin's sludge treatment capacity without significantly expanding the current sludge treatment facilities.

Currently, Ringsend WWTP is undergoing a major upgrade to increase its wastewater treatment capacity. This project, which is being implemented in phases, will enable the treatment of wastewater for a population equivalent (PE) of 2.4 million while meeting the standards of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive. To accommodate this significant increase, the existing sludge line needs to be expanded and upgraded, within an already very congested site, with limited additional building footprint available.

With the Ephyra technology, the existing digesters can be retrofitted, increasing their capacity without requiring new digestion tanks. This will produce sustainable energy in the form of biogas while making significant cost savings.

Jean Hobbs Senior Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann says, “With 40% of all Irish wastewater treated in this facility, we need to increase capacity while protecting the environment and not compromising on performance. There are many complexities and challenges in delivering a project of this scale, not least the necessity to maintain the normal operation of the plant throughout the upgrade works. A robust sludge treatment is part of this performance. We welcome this further development in the delivery of this essential project for Uisce Éireann, which will further improve resilience in the Greater Dublin Area for years to come.

“Ringsend has been treating Dublin’s wastewater for over a century and is Ireland’s largest wastewater treatment plant. Since 2014, the project has been executed by Royal HaskoningDHV in a consortium (3JV) with its Irish partners, J. B. Barry and Partners, and TJ O'Connor & Associates. The Irish partners have also been instrumental in delivering innovation locally to the project with Royal HaskoningDHV.
