[덴마크] 아쿠아포린, 깨끗한 수돗물 확보 위해 아쿠아리아와 협력

덴마크 물기술 회사인 아쿠아포린(Aquaporin)은 유럽에서 네 번째로 큰 물관리 회사인 아쿠아리아(Aqualia)와 협력해 아쿠아포린의 생체 모방 막 요소(biomimetic membrane elements)를 시립 정수처리시설에 도입해 효율성과 경제성을 향상시킬 것이다.

아쿠이리아는 전 세계 17개국의 약 4천350만 명에게 깨끗한 물을 제공하고 있다. 성능 향상을 위해 지속적으로 노력한 결과, 아쿠아포린의 생체 모방 막 요소를 도입해 운영 효율성을 제고시켰다. 아쿠아포린의 막을 사용하면 아쿠아리아는 더 높은 유량 또는 더 낮은 에너지 소비, 오염 물질 제거 증가, 침투 수질 개선 및 비용 효율성 향상으로 도시 용수를 광범위하게 처리할 수 있다.

빅토르 몬살보(Victor Monsalvo) 아쿠아리아의 친환경 부문 책임자는 “지자체로부터 생체 모방 솔루션에 대한 관심과 선호도가 높아지고 있으며, 아쿠아포린은 이러한 기대를 충족하는 데 도움이 될 것이다"라며 "이번 협력은 아쿠아포린 막이 지속가능한 방식으로 고객에게 최상의 수질을 제공하는 데 도움이 될 때 아쿠아포린 막을 특정 분야에서 사용하기 위해 체결됐다"라고 말했다.

배관 프로젝트

아쿠아리아는 아쿠아포린 막이 성공적으로 테스트된 배관이 적용된 새로운 전체 규모의 시립 정수처리시설을 보유하고 있다. 

맷 보츠코우스키(Matt Boczkowski) 아쿠아포린의 CEO는 ”당사는 아쿠아리아가 생체 모방 막을 통해 전 세계 지자체에 깨끗한 식수를 제공할 수 있도록 돕게 돼 기쁘다"며 "1년 넘게 협업한 후, 우리의 노력이 상업적 성공으로 바뀌는 것을 보게 되어 매우 기쁘다"라고 말했다.  맷 보츠코우스키 CEO는 이어 "당사는 지자체가 효율성과 지속가능성 측면에서 기술과 그 장점에 대해 점점 더 인식하게 되면 생체 모방 막에 대한 수요가 증가할 것으로 예상한다"라며, "아쿠아리아와의 협력은 이러한 수요를 준비할 수 있도록 해준다"라고 말했다.

20% 향상된 성능

아쿠아포린과 아쿠아리아가 장기적인 파트너십을 체결하기로 한 결정은 스페인의 서로 다른 지역에서 진행된 4개의 시범 프로젝트의 긍정적인 결과를 기반으로 한다. 예를 들어, 아쿠아포린과 아쿠아리아는 도시 식수에 함유된 높은 수준의 질산염이 특정 인구 집단의 소비를 수년 동안 제한하는 시범 프로젝트를 수행했다. 시범 테스트 결과는 주민들의 오랜 문제에 대한 해결책을 제시해 기존의 막에 비해 질산염을 제거하기 위해 아쿠아포린의 생체 모방 막 요소를 사용했을 때 성능이 20% 개선됐음을 보여줬다. 황산염 및 불소화물 제거와 기수 담수화에서도 유사한 성능 개선이 관찰됐다. 그 결과 양사는 향후 충분한 물공급을 확보할 수 있는 스마트 물생태계를 조성하기 위해 EU H2020 프로젝트인 스마트 경제를 위한 물혁신(REsilient WAter Innovation(www.REWAISE.eu) 내에서도 협력하고 있다.

Aquaporin in milestone collaboration to secure clean tap water

 

The Danish water technology company Aquaporin has entered into a collaboration with Aqualia, the fourth largest water management company in Europe, which will promote and use Aquaporin’s biomimetic membrane elements at municipal water treatment plants to improve their efficiency and economics.

Aqualia serves nearly 43.5 million people living in 17 different countries across the globe with clean water. In their constant drive for improved performance, they turned to Aquaporin’s biomimetic membrane elements to increase the efficiency of their operations. With Aquaporin membranes, Aqualia will be empowered to treat municipal water on a broad scale with either higher water flux or lower energy input, increased rejection of contaminants, improved permeate water quality, and enhanced cost-efficiency.

“We are experiencing an increased interest and preference for biomimetic solutions from the municipalities where we are present, and Aquaporin will help to meet these expectations. The scope of the collaboration is for Aqualia to primarily use Aquaporin membranes in certain applications when they help achieve the best water quality for our customers in a sustainable manner” says Victor Monsalvo, Aqualia Head of Eco-efficiency Area.

Projects in the pipeline

Aqualia has new full-scale municipal drinking water treatment plants in the pipeline where Aquaporin membranes were successfully tested.

”We are pleased to help Aqualia deliver clean drinking water to municipalities all over the world with our biomimetic membranes. After working together for over a year, we are very glad to see our efforts turn to commercial success. We expect to see the demand for biomimetic membranes rise, as municipalities become increasingly aware of the technology and its merits in terms of efficiency and sustainability. 20 % better performance

The decision for Aquaporin and Aqualia to enter into a long-term partnership is based on the positive outcome of four pilot projects in different locations in Spain. For instance, Aquaporin and Aqualia ran a pilot project where a high level of nitrate in the municipal drinking water limited the consumption by certain population groups for years. The results from the pilot showed a 20 % performance increase when using Aquaporin’s biomimetic membrane elements to remove nitrate compared to conventional membranes which assured the citizens a solution had been found to a problem that had long been of concern to them. Similar improvements in performance were observed for the removal of sulfates and fluorides, and brackish water desalination. As a result, the two companies are also partnering within the EU H2020 project REsilient WAter Innovation for Smart Economy – www.REWAISE.eu – to create a smart water ecosystem that will secure sufficient water supplies in the future.
