[미국] EPA, 워터센스 프로그램 통해 물 7조5천억 갤런 절약"

미국 환경보호청(EPA)은 지난해 워터센스(WaterSense) 달성 보고서를 발표하면서 워터센스 라벨 제품을 사용하는 소비자들이 2022년에 1조1천억 갤런 이상의 물을 절약했다고 밝혔다. EPA의 워터센스 프로그램이 2006년에 시작된 이래로, 소비자들과 기업들은 물을 절약하는 배관 설비와 관개 제품을 구매함으로써 7조5천억 갤런 이상의 물을 절약한 것으로 나타났다.

워터센스는 2천 개 이상의 유틸리티, 커뮤니티, 제조업체, 주택 건설업체, 소매업체 및 기타 조직과 협력하여 물을 덜 사용하고 성능이 우수한 것으로 인증된 변기, 수도꼭지, 샤워기, 스프레이 스프링클러 본체, 관개 컨트롤러 등을 생산하고 홍보한다.

앤드류 소이어(Andrew Sawyers) EPA 하·폐수관리국 국장은 "소비자들이 물을 절약하고 우리의 물 효율성 노력을 기반으로 하기 위해 집과 회사에서 워터센스 라벨이 부착된 제품을 사용하는 것을 보는 것은 고무적이다"면서 "게다가, 미국인들은 이 제품들과 관련된 상당한 공공 시설 비용과 에너지를 절약했다"고 말했다.

2006년부터 수도꼭지, 수도꼭지 액세서리 및 샤워기 헤드 라벨이 부착된 워터센스는 미국 가정이 거의 8천800억KWH의 전기를 절약하는 데 도움을 주었고, 약 8천300만 가구에 1년치 전력을 공급할 수 있는 에너지인 560억 그루의 나무를 심는 것과 맞먹는 3억7천700만 미터톤의 온실 가스 배출을 제거했다. 아울러 소비자들은 워터센스를 통해 지난 16년 동안 1천710억 달러의 물 및 에너지 비용을 절감했다.

Consumers and Businesses Look to WaterSense and Save 7.5 Trillion Gallons of Water

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released its 2022 WaterSense Accomplishments Report today, noting that consumers using WaterSense labeled products saved more than 1.1 trillion gallons of water in 2022. Since, EPA’s WaterSense program was launched in 2006, consumers and businesses have saved more than 7.5 trillion gallons of water by purchasing water-saving plumbing fixtures and irrigation products.

WaterSense partners and works with more than 2,000 utilities, communities, manufacturers, home builders, retailers, and other organizations to produce and promote toilets, faucets, showerheads, spray sprinkler bodies, irrigation controllers and homes that are independently certified to use less water and perform well. Americans can look to the WaterSense label to save water, energy, and money.

“It’s encouraging to see consumers using WaterSense labeled products in their homes and businesses to conserve water and build upon our water efficiency efforts,” said Andrew Sawyers, Director of EPA’s Office of Wastewater Management. “What’s more, Americans saved significant utility costs and energy associated with these products.”

Since 2006, WaterSense labeled faucets, faucet accessories, and showerheads have helped American homes save 880 billion kilowatt hours of electricity ? enough energy to supply a year’s worth of power to nearly 83 million homes ? and eliminated 377 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions ? the equivalent of planting 5.6 billion trees. The energy and water savings associated with WaterSense labeled products has also saved consumers $171 billion in water and energy bills over the past 16 years.
