세계 최대의 민영 담수화 기업이자 녹색 수소의 선두주자인 ACWA 파워(ACWA Power)는 지난 7월 16일 일본의 기술 공급업체인 토레이 인더스트리(Toray Industries)와 해수 역삼투(SWRO) 담수화 시설의 에너지 절약 기술을 개발하기 위해 양해각서(MoU)를 체결했다고 밝혔다.

양해각서는 사우디 투자부가 주관한 사우디-일본 투자 원탁회의에서 체결됐으며, 이번 협력은 ACWA 파워의 담수화 시설 내 막 공정에 소비되는 에너지를 저감시키기 위한 양사의 공동 연구를 주요 골자로 한다.

ACWA 파워는 토레이가 에너지 효율을 개선하기 위해 실행 가능한 솔루션을 분석하고 제공할 수 있도록 시설 운영 세부 사항을 공유하기로 했다.

라드 알사디(Raad Al Saady) ACWA 파워의 부회장 겸 상무이사는 "토레이와의 이번 협력은 물의 담수화에서 에너지가 활용되는 방식을 개선하려는 당사의 비전에 기여하고 책임감 있고 지속 가능하며 비용 효율적인 방식으로 지역사회에 식수를 제공하려는 당사의 약속을 더욱 강화시킨다"라고 말했다.

기무라 키미오(Kimio Kimura) 토레이 막 중동 시장 사장은 "당사는 막 기술의 에너지 효율성을 향상시키고 ACWA 파워와 사우디아라비아의 전반적인 지속 가능성 목표에 기여할 수 있는 혁신적인 방법을 공동으로 연구함으로써 ACWA 파워의 지속 가능성에 대한 약속을 지지하게 되어 자랑스럽다"라고 전했다. 

ACWA 파워는 2007년부터 토레이의 첨단 솔루션을 여러 프로젝트에 활용하고 있다. 현재 ACWA 파워의 포트폴리오에 있는 8개 시설에서 토레이의 역삼투압(RO) 제품을 사용해 약 400만㎥/일의 담수를 생산하고 있으며, 2개의 신규 시설이 가동되면 130만㎥/일의 담수를 추가로 생산할 것이다. 

또한 토레이는 사우디에 본사를 둔 아부나얀 홀딩(Abunayyan Holding)과 함께 토레이 막 중동이라는 합작 투자 회사에 참여하고 있으며, 2025년에 가동될 담맘(Dammam)에 사우디 최초의 RO 막 제조 공장을 제공할 예정이다.

Toray to analyse ACWA Power’s operational plants to provide commercially viable solutions to improve energy efficiency

 

ACWA Power, a Saudi-listed company and the world's largest private water desalination company, the first mover into green hydrogen, and a leader in energy transition, today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Japanese technology provider Toray Industries, to explore energy-saving technologies for seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plants.

Signed on the sidelines of the Saudi-Japan Investment Roundtable organised by the Ministry of Investment, the MoU will see the two companies engaging in joint research to reduce the energy consumption associated with membranes used in ACWA Power’s desalination plants.

ACWA Power will share operational details of its plants with Toray, allowing the latter to analyse and provide commercially viable solutions to improve energy efficiency.

We are proud to support ACWA Power’s commitment to sustainability by jointly researching innovative ways to enhance the energy efficiency of membrane technologies, contributing to the overall sustainability objectives of both ACWA Power and Saudi Arabia.

Since 2007, ACWA Power has utilised Toray’s advanced solutions in several projects. Currently, nearly 4 million cubic metre per day (m3/day) of desalinated water produced out of eight plants in ACWA Power’s portfolio deploys Toray’s reverse osmosis (RO) products, with another 1.3 million m3/day expected to be added once two other plants achieve commercial operation. The participation represents almost 20 per cent of Toray’s global market presence.

Toray is also involved in a joint venture called Toray Membrane Middle East alongside Saudi-based Abunayyan Holding, which will deliver the Kingdom’s first RO membrane manufacturing plant in Dammam, scheduled to start operations in 2025.
