‘뉴 워터(NEW WATER)’는 식수가 되기 위해 추가적인 처리 과정을 거친 사용된 물에서 공급되는 음용수이다.

 

메이닐라드(Maynilad)는 현재 파라나케(Paranaque)시의 바랑가이 산 이시드로(Barrangays San Issidro)와 산 디오니시오(San Dionisio)에 거주하는 1만3천여명의 주민에게 서비스를 제공하는 파라나케 뉴 워터 처리장(Paranaque NEW WATER Treatment Plant)에서 하루에 500만 리터(5천㎥)의 ‘뉴 워터(NEW WATER)’를 생산하고 있다.

 

필리핀 정부 보건부가 이 시설에 대한 영구 운영 허가를 승인하면서 ‘식수 재사용(potable water reuse)’에 대한 초기 진출이 성공적으로 진행된 후, 메이닐라드는 현재 파세이(Pasay), 발렌주엘라(Valenzuela), 문틴루파(Muntinlupa)에 유사한 새로운 정수장을 건설하고 있으며 파라나케에 기존 정수장의 용량을 확장하고 있다.

 

이 정수장이 가동이 완료되면 5개의 ‘뉴 워터(NEW WATER)’ 정수장은 모두 총 970만 리터(9천700㎥)의 용량을 갖게 되며, 이는 약 40만 명의 주민이 필요로 하는 물을 공급하기에 충분한 양이다.

 

아직 건설 중인 4개 시설 중 발렌주엘라에 있는 시설은 2023년 안에 가동을 시작할 예정이며, 엘니뇨의 영향을 완화하기 위해 1천㎥의 추가 급수를 생산할 것으로 예상된다.

 

메이닐라드는 기후변화의 영향으로 인해 기존 원수원에 대한 부담뿐만 아니라 물에 대한 수요 증가를 고려하여 가용 공급을 늘리기 위해 음용 가능한 물 재사용으로 나아가고 있다. 이는 또한 필리핀의 순환 경제를 지원한다.

 

메이닐라드(Maynilad)의 라몬시토 S. 페르난데스(Ramoncito S. Fernandez) 회장 겸 CEO는 “처리된 사용된 물은 지속가능한 원수 공급원이기 때문에 메이닐라드는 결국 전통적인 수원에 대한 의존도를 줄일 수 있도록 이를 대체 공급원에 포함시키기 위해 노력했다”고 말했다.

 

메이닐라드는 고객 기반 측면에서 필리핀에서 가장 큰 민간 수도기업이다. 메이닐라드는 마닐라(Manila), 케손시티(Quezon City), 마카티(Makati) 일부 및 칼로칸(Caloocan), 파사이(Pasay), 파라나케(Paranaque), 라스 피나스(Las Pinas), 문틴루파(Muntinlupa), 발렌주엘라(Valenzuela), 나보타스(Navotas), 말라본(Malabon) 수돗물을 공급하는데, 모두 수도인 마닐라에 있다. 이와함께 카비테(Cavite), 바쿠르(Bacoor), 이무스(Imus), 그리고 카윗(Kawit), 노벨레타(Novelleta), 로사리오(Rosario) 등은 카비테 주에 있다.

Maynilad allots Php5.7B for “NEW WATER” Treatment Plants

 

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) will be investing Php5.7 billion for the construction of five NEW WATER Treatment Plants in four cities up to 2027. 

 

“NEW WATER” is potable water supply sourced from used water that went through additional treatment processes to become drinkable.

 

Maynilad currently produces 5 million liters per day (MLD) of NEW WATER from its Paranaque NEW WATER Treatment Plant, which serves almost 13,000 customers in Barangays San Isidro and San Dionisio in Paranaque City. 

 

Following the successful run of its initial foray into “potable water reuse” with the Department of Health’s grant of a permanent operational permit for this facility, Maynilad is now constructing similar NEW WATER Treatment Plants in Pasay, Valenzuela and Muntinlupa, and expanding the capacity of its existing one in Paranaque.

 

Once operational, all five NEW WATER treatment plants will have a total combined capacity of 97 MLD, which is enough to supply the water needs of almost 400,000 customers.

 

Of the four facilities still under construction, the one in Valenzuela is expected to start operations within 2023, producing 1 MLD of additional water supply to help ease the impact of El Nino.

 

Maynilad is moving towards potable water reuse in a bid to boost available supplies given the growing demand for water, as well as the strain on existing raw water sources due to the impact of climate change. This is also in support of a circular economy in the Philippines.

 

“Treated used water is a sustainable source of raw water supply, so Maynilad endeavored to include this among its alternate sources so we can eventually reduce reliance on traditional sources,” said Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez.

 

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base. It is the concessionaire of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (certain portions), Quezon City (certain portions), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Paranaque, Las Pinas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario, all in Cavite Province.
