PFAS 처리 신기술로 지하수 정화…지하수서 오염물질 흐름 차단

인프라 적어 지하수 정화에 드는 설치, 운영 비용 절감

 

리제네시스(REGENESIS®)는 24일 자사의 지하수 정화 기술 ‘플룸스톱(PlumeStop)’이 패스트 컴퍼니(Fast Company)의 2023 디자인 혁신상(Innovation by Design Awards)의 최종 후보로 선정됐다고 발표했다. 

플룸스톱은 과불화화합물(PFAS), 염소화 용매 및 기타 처리하기 어려운 지하수 오염 물질을 처리하는 기술이다. 플룸스톱은 전 세계적으로 심각한 문제인 PFAS의 위험을 제거하고, PFAS의 영향을 받는 지역 사회의 지하수 오염 문제를 해결한다.

스콧 윌슨 리제네시스의 사장은 “패스트 컴퍼니의 디자인 혁신상의 최종 후보로 선정돼 영광이다”라며 "플룸스톱은 지하수에서 오염 물질을 제거해 문제를 해결한다“라고 말했다. 

플룸스톱은 1~2마이크로미터 크기의 활성탄으로 이뤄진 액체형 활성탄을 제조하는 기술이다. 이는 콜로이드(colloid) 활성탄의 형태로 지하수에 주입돼 지하수를 정화한다.

플룸스톱이 지하수에 주입되면 대수층에 층을 이루고, 오염물질을 흡착해 생분해를 시켜 오염물질을 제거한다. 이 기술은 한 번 오염물질을 생분해한 후에도 새로 유입되는 오염물질을 정화해 지속적으로 오염물질을 제거한다. 산업 제조 시설, 국방부 현장 및 미국 EPA 슈퍼펀드(Superfund) 현장 등에서 활용되고 있다.

다른 PFAS 봉쇄 기술과 달리 플룸스톱은 폐기물 흐름을 생성하지 않으며 매립지 및 소각 시설에 책임을 전가하지 않는다. 플룸스톱은 관련 인프라가 적어, 펌프와 처리 시스템에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 설치·운영 및 유지보수 비용이 거의 들지 않는다. 다른 PFAS 처리 방식에 비해 훨씬 적은 비용으로 효과적이고 빠르게 오염물질을 제거할 수 있다. 

한편, 올해로 12회를 맞는 패스트 컴퍼니의 디자인 혁신상은 오늘날의 환경 및 사회 문제를 해결하고, 미래에 발생할 문제를 예측하는 기업에 수여된다. 업계에서 가장 인기 있는 디자인 상 중 하나다. 

심사 위원에는 유명 디자이너, 비즈니스 리더, 패스트 컴퍼니의 작가 및 편집자가 포함된다. 심사기준은 기능성, 독창성, 아름다움, 지속 가능성, 사용자 통찰력, 문화 및 비즈니스 영향을 포함하며 혁신의 측면에서 주로 평가한다.

2023년의 영예에는 어도비, 펩시, 칸바 등을 포함한 약 500개 프로젝트, 제품 및 서비스가 선정됐다.

PlumeStop PFAS treatment transforms underlying geology into a purifying filter and prevents PFAS from migrating further.
