Panasonic Holdings Corporation to Start the World¡¯s First* Long-term Implementation Demonstration Project for the Building Integrated Perovskite Photovoltaics Glass in the Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town


 

Panasonic Holdings Corporation (Panasonic HD) today announced that it has developed the prototype of the building integrated Perovskite photovoltaics glass, and started the long-term implementation demonstration project including technical tests lasting more than a year at the newly constructed model house ¡°Future Co-Creation FINECOURT III¡± in the Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town (Fujisawa SST), Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.


Panasonic HD defines Perovskite photovoltaics as ¡°Energy-Generating Glasses¡± in our town and life. Panasonic HD aims to both generate renewable energy and harmonize with cityscape, as well as reducing CO2.


Aiming to improve energy conversion and reliability through the demonstration, Panasonic HD accelerate establishment of the technologies for practical application in new markets.


¡áBackground


Global demand of photovoltaics for renewable energy is rising, aiming to carbon neutral and decarbonization. However, the available space installing solar cells is limited in urban area. To overcome such limitation, the installation of solar cells on windows and walls are needed. There have been challenges in terms of transparency and design by using conventional Silicon-based solar cells when it comes to installing them on glass surfaces such as windows.


The glass integrated Perovskite solar cells developed by Panasonic HD will make such problem solved. It will contribute the significant increasing of on-site power generation including urban area. From the perspective of local power generation and consumption, it is also expected to contribute to the resilience of power supply chain, especially during natural disasters.

Our goal is to achieve glass integrated Perovskite solar cells, which are designed to directly form the photovoltaic layer on the glass substrate, enabling the creation of "power-generating glass" building materials that can be used in various architectural structures. Panasonic HD aims to utilize this technology in a wide range of buildings. By combining our original inkjet coating method and laser processing technology, we can enhance flexibility in terms of size, transparency, and design, allowing for customization according to specific requirements.
