ACCIONA starts the start-up of the Jubail 3B reverse osmosis desalination plant

ACCIONA - together with its consortium partner Sepco 3 and in close collaboration with Al Jubail International Water Company and the Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) - has already commissioned the Jubail 3B desalination plant by switching on the power transformers and their downstream distribution panels.
The next step will be to start the operation of the pumps alone, waiting for seawater to proceed with the start-up.
Once all the parameters required at each filtration stage have been met, the process will continue until the plant produces drinking water, in the coming months, with the aim of having the plant fully operational by 2024.
The facility, equipped with reverse osmosis technology, will have a daily capacity of 570,000 cubic meters and in 2024, once it becomes commercially operational, it will be able to supply two million people in the cities of Riyadh and Qassim.
"This is an important milestone that demonstrates that the spirit of cooperation and the joint effort of all stakeholders are allowing us to complete all phases in time for the plant to be fully operational by 2024," says Adelaida Fernandez Diaz, Project Director of Jubail 3B.
Javier Nieto, director of ACCIONA Water in Saudi Arabia, believes that the Jubail 3 B Project is a benchmark among desalination plants that use renewable energy: "This plant will contribute to Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 plan and its net zero emissions objectives, which seek to reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels and promote the shift towards clean energy."
EMISSIONS REDUCTION
In addition to the entire reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant, ACCIONA will build a 61MWp capacity photovoltaic solar installation next to it, thus becoming the desalination plant with the largest solar capacity in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which will reduce the energy consumption of the grid. To this end, 70% of all available land will be covered with photovoltaic panels that will substantially reduceCO2 emissions.
In addition, the plant is equipped with reverse osmosis technology, which is not only the most economical solution, but also the most sustainable: desalinating 1000 liters of water consumes the same amount of energy as the air conditioning system of a house for one hour.
