카길(Cargill)은 11월 7일(현지시각) 지속가능성 목표를 향한 자사의 진행 상황을 설명하고 운영, 공급망 및 지역사회 전반에 걸쳐 긍정적인 글로벌 영향을 이끌어내기 위한 작업을 보여주는 2023 회계연도 ESG 보고서를 발간했다고 밝혔다.

카길의 지속가능성 전략은 기후·토지·물 영역에서 제품과 파트너십, 프로그램을 구축함으로써 책임감 있고 안전하며 지속 가능한 방식으로 전 세계에 영양분을 공급한다는 목적을 달성하기 위해 설계됐다.

브라이언 사이크스(Brian Sikes) 카길의 사장은 "지구가 직면한 도전과 관련해 식품 체계 전반에 걸친 카길의 연결성은 의미 있는 솔루션을 전달할 기회를 제공한다"며 "농업 문제를 해결하는 잠재력은 항상 사람들에게 영양을 공급하고, 농부 및 식품 업계 종사자의 생계를 지원하는 등 성장을 위한 기회를 여는 데 필수"라고 말했다.

사이크스 사장은 이어 "카길은 이러한 가치를 바탕으로 기아 제로(Zero Hunger)를 달성하고 산업을 탈탄소화한다"며 "이를 통해  천연자원을 보호·복구하고 궁극적으로 사람들의 삶을 개선하기 위해 노력하고 있다"고 덧붙였다. 

카길은 업무상 모든 일에서 사람을 최우선으로 생각하고 옳은 일을 따르며, 더 높은 곳에 도달하는 것을 목표로 한다. 올해 보고서의 결과와 진행 상황은 이러한 가치가 실제로 실행되고 있음을 보여준다. 카길의 주요 성과는 다음과 같다.

- 카길 운영의 효율성 및 지속 가능성 프로젝트에 7천800만 달러 투자

- 운영하는 데 발생하는 배출량 10.97% 감축해 2017년 대비 10% 감축하는 2025년 목표 달성

- 2020년부터 북미 농경지 88만 에이커에 재생농업 선진화 실천

- 2023년 90억 리터 이상의 물 복원

- 협력사와 지역사회를 지원하기 위해 1억1천500만 달러 이상 분배해 전 세계적으로 2천만 개 이상의 식사 제공

필라르 크루즈(Pilar Cruz) 카길의 최고 지속 가능성 책임자는 "파트너십의 힘은 우리의 발전을 촉진하고 있고 고객과 식품 생산자, 이해관계자와 신뢰할 수 있는 관계를 통해 카길은 더 큰 영향력을 발휘할 수 있다"며 "우리는 식량과 농업에서 무엇이 가능한지를 재구상하는 데 중요한 역할을 하고 있다"고 밝혔다.

크루즈 책임자는 이어 "우리는 카길의 가치를 실천하는 것이 기후와 토지, 물을 위한 더 큰 가치를 더할 수 있음을 알고 있다"며 "그 목표를 달성하기 위해 최선을 다하고 있다"고 강조했다.

Cargill’s 2023 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report Showcases the Company’s Progress to Deliver Positive Impact on Climate, Land and Water, and People

Investing $78 million in efficiency and sustainability projects within Cargill’s operations.

Reducing emissions from its operations by 10.97%, achieving its 2025 goal of reducing operations from its emissions by 10% against a 2017 baseline.

Advancing regenerative agriculture practices on 880,000 acres of North American agricultural land since 2020.

Restoring more than 9 billion liters of water in fiscal year 2023.

Distributing more than $115 million to support partners and local communities, and together, providing more than 20 million meals globally in fiscal year 2023.
