[미국] EPA, 캘리포니아 중소기업 3곳에 120만 달러 지원 … 환경문제 연구 및 녹생 경제 성장 견인

미국 환경보호청(EPA)은 환경 기술을 개발하고 상업화하기 위해 캘리포니아 중소기업 3곳에 약 120만 달러에 달하는 연구 자금을 지원한다고 발표했다. 자금은 해당 기관의 중소기업 혁신 연구(Small Business Innovation Research, SBIR) 보조금 프로그램을 통해 제공된다.

마샤 구즈만(Martha Guzman) EPA 태평양 남서부 지역 담당자는 “캘리포니아의 중소기업은 지역 사회에 광범위한 혜택을 제공하는 혁신적이고 실용적인 폐기물 제로(0) 솔루션을 만드는 데 앞장서고 있다”면서 "기술을 시장에 출시하려는 이들 기업의 노력은 순환 경제를 발전시키는 동시에 매립지로 가는 폐기물을 줄이고 온실가스 배출을 줄일 것"이라고 말했다.

매년 EPA는 대상 환경 주제에 대한 기술 제안에 대한 SBIR 요청을 발행한다. SBIR 프로그램은 두 단계의 자금 조달로 구성된다. 앞서 이번에 발표한 중소기업은 제안된 기술의 '이론 증명(proof of concept)' 기간인 6개월 동안 최대 10만 달러의 1단계 계약을 체결했다. 이제 이번 2단계 발표를 통해 기업은 기술을 더욱 개발하고 상용화하기 위해 최대 40만 달러를 수여받을 수 있다.

올해 캘리포니아의 SBIR 2단계 수상기업은 다음과 같다.

하이드로바(Hydrova Inc.), 40만 달러 : 하이드로바는 2차 알루미늄 공정 폐기물로부터 자원을 회수하고, 2차 알루미늄 공정 폐기물을 회수한다. 이 기술은 전통적으로 매립된 폐기물을 알루미늄 및 시멘트 산업에서 재사용할 수 있는 귀중한 제품으로 변환한다.

줄리안 데이비스(Julian Davis )하이드로바 CEO는 "EPA의 2단계 보조금은 하이드로바의 'DrossZero™' 시스템의 상용화를 지원할 것"이라면서 "하이드로바는 알루미늄 산업의 순환을 통해 첨단 재활용 기술 분야에서 미국의 리더십을 더욱 강화하고 있다"고 말했다.

카밀로(Kamilo, Inc.),39만9천989달러 : 카밀로는 플라스틱 순환성을 향상시키기 위해 개별 제품의 재활용 함량 비율을 디지털로 검증한다. 카밀로의 특허받은 지리공간 기술은 폐플라스틱을 추적한다. 이 프로젝트는 제품의 재활용 콘텐츠 비율을 계산하는 기능을 확장하고 규정 준수를 지원하고 마케팅 주장을 입증하는 카밀로 '신뢰 마크(TrustMark)' 검증 라벨을 통해 이 정보를 전달한다.

안나-매리 쿡(Anna-Marie Cook) 카밀로 CEO는 “카밀로의 혁신적인 기술과 미국 재활용 및 플라스틱 순환성에 실질적인 영향을 미칠 수 있는 기회를 EPA로부터 인정받게 되어 매우 기쁘다”라면서 “EPA SBIR 프로그램 덕분에 카밀로는 'Kamilo % Recycled Content TrustMark'를 상용화할 준비가 되었다"고 말했다.

자블(Zabble Inc.), 40만 달러 : 자블은 재활용 및 퇴비화 개선을 위한 오염 모니터링 감사를 위한 인공 지능 기반(AI) 태깅 플랫폼을 통해 관할권에서는 리드 플립(lid flip) 또는 현장 방문 프로그램을 엔드 투 엔드(end-to-end)로 관리하고 오염 감소 지원 캠페인의 효과를 측정할 수 있다.

닉 발라찬드란(Nik Balachandran) 자블 창립자 겸 CEO는 “자블의 솔루션은 단순히 간소화되고 번거롭지 않은 운영 그 이상을 의미하며, 이는 AI를 단순한 버즈워드(buzzword)에서 캘리포니아와 그 너머 지역의 실질적인 발전을 촉진하는 실질적인 힘으로 바꾸겠다는 우리의 약속을 구체화한 것”이라면서 "EPA의 귀중한 지원을 통해 우리는 폐기물 및 재활용 관리자의 요구 사항을 깊이 조사하여 시스템 전체의 오염 감소부터 납세자의 비용 최소화하고, 지구에 대한 배출 감소에 이르기까지 지속적인 영향을 미칠 수 있도록 했다"고 말했다.

EPA Awards Nearly $1.2M to Three California Small Businesses to Research Environmental Issues and Help Grow the Green Economy

 

This week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is announcing almost $1.2 million in research funding to three California small businesses to further develop and commercialize their environmental technologies. The funding comes through the agency’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant program.

“California’s small businesses are leaders in creating innovative and practical zero waste solutions that have far-reaching benefits for communities,” said EPA Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator Martha Guzman. “These companies’ efforts to bring their technologies to market will advance the circular economy while reducing waste that ends up in a landfill and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.”

Each year, EPA issues an SBIR solicitation for technology proposals for targeted environmental topics. The SBIR program consists of two phases of funding. The companies announced today earlier received Phase I contracts of up to $100,000 for six months during the “proof of concept” of their proposed technologies. Now, for this Phase II announcement, companies are awarded up to $400,000 to further develop and commercialize their technologies.

This year’s SBIR Phase II award recipients in California are:

Hydrova Inc. (Santa Ana; $400,000) - A novel process to recover resources and produce hydrogen from secondary aluminum processing waste. The technology transforms traditionally landfilled wastes into valuable products that can be reused by the aluminum and cement industries.

"The EPA's Phase II grant will support the commercialization of Hydrova's DrossZero™ systems,” said Julian Davis, CEO of Hydrova Inc. “By closing the loop in the aluminum industry, Hydrova is furthering the United States' leadership in advanced recycling technologies."

Kamilo, Inc. (San Francisco; $399,989) - Digital verification of the percentage of recycled content in individual products to advance plastic circularity. Kamilo’s patented geospatial technology tracks waste plastic. This project will expand the ability to calculate the percentage of recycled content in products and convey this information with a Kamilo “TrustMark” verification label supporting regulatory compliance and substantiating marketing claims.

The AI powered platform enables jurisdictions to manage their lid flip or site visit programs end-to-end and measure the effectiveness of contamination reduction outreach campaigns.
