테크닙 에너지(Technip Energes)는 11월 14일(현지시각) IBM·언더 아머(Under Armour)와 공동 개발한 혁신 기술을 통해 섬유 PET(폴리에틸렌 테레프탈레이트) 재활용(rPET)에 중점을 둔 새로운 회사인 레주(Reju)를 설립했다고 발표했다.

레주는 재활용, 규제 및 플라스틱 폐기물 감소의 필요성에 대한 소비자 인식에 따라 2033년까지 섬유 시장의 수요가 최대 20Mtpa까지 성장할 것으로 예상되는 글로벌 rPET 시장을 개척할 것이다.

테크닙 에너지와 IBM, 언더아머는 2021년부터 공동 사업으로 폐 PET 포장재 및 폴리에스터를 재생하기 위한 IBM 기술인 볼캣(VolCat)을 산업 규모로 적용하기 위해 협력하고 있다. 볼캣은 IBM이 반도체 리소그래피 및 마이크로일렉트로닉스 포장과 같은 기술에 처음 적용한 폴리머의 선택적 분해를 허용한다. 

레주는 이 기술을 사용해 재활용이 어려운 폴리에스테르 의류를 비롯해 오늘날 폐기물 흐름으로 손실되는 PET 포장재를 처리할 계획이다. 분자 분류기 역할을 하는 이 기술을 통해 PET는 무한히 재생될 수 있다.

지난 9월 테크닙 에너지 프랑크푸르트 연구센터(Technip Energies Frankfurt Research Center)에서 레주의 시범 플랜트 기공식이 열렸다. 레주 시범 플랜트는 2024년 완공될 예정이다.

아르노 피에톤(Arnaud Pieton) 테크닙 에너지의 CEO는 "세계적으로 오늘날 PET 섬유 폐기물의 1% 미만이 재활용되고 있는데, 이는 대부분의 섬유가 새로운 옷으로 반복 재사용될 수 있음에도 결국 폐기물로 버려진다는 것을 의미한다"며 "섬유의 순환성에서 세계의 문제는 섬유 재활용에 대한 수요 부족이 아니라 산업적 규모에서 섬유의 재활용을 경제적으로 만드는 해결책의 부족"이라고 말했다.

피에톤 CEO는 이어 "이 영역에서 확장 가능한 기술은 테크닙 에너지와 같은 전문과와 직접적으로 관련이 있다"며 "레주는 경제적인 섬유 재활용의 목표를 이룰 것이고 우리는 순환의 적극적인 주체로서 우리의 역할을 확장하는 것을 자랑스럽게 생각한다"고 덧붙였다.

아르빈드 크리슈나(Arvind Krishna) IMB의 CEO는 "지구의 건강은 그 어느 때보다 시급한 문제"라며 "오늘날 쓰레기 매립지에 버려지는 의류와 섬유의 양은 엄청나다"고 밝혔다.

크리슈나 CEO는 이어 "좋은 소식은 기술이 이 문제를 해결하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다는 것"이라며 "IBM은 지속가능한 섬유 재활용을 진전하기 위해 볼캣 기술을 제공하게 돼 기쁘고, 테크닙 에너지, 레주와 협력해 이러한 목표를 위해 전세계 섬유 산업 중심에 지속 가능성을 두기를 바란다"고 덧붙였다.

패트릭 프리스크(Patrik Frisk) 레주의 CEO는 "섬유 재활용을 위한 진정한 순환 생태계를 구축하고 화학 회사 및 의류 산업 등 전체 가치사슬에 걸친 협업을 이룰 기회를 얻었다"며 "우리는 PET 섬유 산업을 크게 변화할 생태계의 기반을 마련하고 있다"고 강조했다.

한편 테크닙 에너지는 에너지 전환을 위한 엔지니어링 및 기술 회사로, 청정 수소 및 지속가능한 화학 분야에서 시장 입지를 강화하고 있다.

Technip Energies Creates Reju – An Innovative Polyester Textile Regeneration Company

 

Building on its technology partnership with IBM and Under Armour, Technip Energies announces the launch of Reju, an innovative company focused on creating new solutions at scale for the vast amount of plastic fiber in textiles that goes unrecycled and ends up as waste. Former Under Armour CEO and apparel industry veteran Patrik Frisk is heading the new company along with Alain Poincheval, COO, a senior executive with Technip Energies.

PARIS--Regulatory News: Technip Energies (PARIS: TE) (ISIN:NL0014559478) announces the creation of Reju, a new company focused on PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) recycling (rPET) of textiles that will leverage the innovative technology co-developed in joint-venture with IBM and Under Armour as well as Technip Energies’ global engineering and technology integration expertise.

Reju will address the fast-growing market of global rPET whose demand from the textile market is expected to grow up to 20 Mtpa by 2033, driven by industry pledges and targets on recycling, regulation and consumer awareness of the need to reduce plastic waste.

Technip Energies, IBM and Under Armour have been working together since 2021 in a joint venture to bring VolCat, an IBM technology for rejuvenating waste PET packaging and polyester, to an industrial scale. VolCat allows the selective breakdown of polymers which IBM first applied to technologies like semiconductor lithography and microelectronics packaging. Reju intends to use this technology to address hard-to-recycle polyester garments and PET packaging lost to the waste stream today. With this technology, acting as a molecular sorter, PET could be regenerated infinitely.

The groundbreaking ceremony for Reju’s demonstration plant took place in September in Technip Energies Frankfurt Research Center with the facility expected to come on stream in 2024.
