체로키 물재생시설, 90-95% 높은 회수율 달성

세계적인 수처리 솔루션 분야의 선도적인 글로벌 공급업체인 IDE 테크놀로지(IDE Technologies)는 지난 11월 15일 체로키 메트로폴리탄 디스트릭트(Cherokee Metropolitan District)의 물재이용 시설이 완벽하게 가동되고 있으며, 90~95%의 높은 회수율을 보이고 있다고 발표했다.

이 프로젝트는 4천500만 달러를 투자해 체로키 메트로폴리탄 디스트릭트를 4.8MGD 규모의 물재생시설로 개조 및 개선하는 것을 주요 목적으로 하며, 증가하는 원폐수 내 총 용존 고형물(TDS) 수준을 관리하고 지자체가 배출 제한 수준을 준수하도록 돕는다.

체로키 메트로폴리탄 디스트릭트는 원폐수 염도 수준이 600mg/L TDS를 초과해 새로운 방류 한도를 충족시키는 해결책이 필요했다. 여러 해결책을 탐색한 후 IDE가 공급하는 새로운 역삼투(RO) 공정을 통합하기로 결정했다. 이 공정에는 미세 스크리닝 및 그릿 제거 기능을 갖춘 헤드워크 시스템, 기존 SBR 4개 중 2개를 MBR로 전환하는 작업, IDE의 고회수 역삼투(RO) 시스템이 포함됐다.

최종 결과는 9 MGD MBR과 RO 투과가 MBR 여과액과 혼합될 수 있도록 설계된 1.6 MGD 고회수 RO 시스템을 사용하는 시설로, 최종 유출수를 400 mg/L 허용 수준 이하로 낮추도록 한다.

IDE의 PFRO는 수압 및 삼투압 조건을 교대로 구현해 스케일링 및 생물 부착 현상을 크게 줄이는 세미 배치 공정이다. 독특한 설계로 인해 일반적으로 높은 회수율에 도달하기 위해 필요한 3~4단계의 작업이 필요 없다.

PFRO는 염수 밸브를 개폐해 데드 앤드 여과(dead-end filtration)에서 염수 배출 모드로 작동 모드를 지속적으로 변경하는 단일 단계 RO를 사용해 염수 흐름 내 실리카 농도가 250ppm 이상으로 90~95%의 회수율을 달성한다. 체로키 메트로폴리탄 디스트릭트는 회수율 높은 RO로 깊은 관정 주입 대신 동쪽 절반의 부지를 증발 연못으로 사용할 수 있어 상당한 비용 절감 효과를 얻을 수 있다.

IDE의 PFRO 기술은 캘리포니아의 피스모 비치(Pismo Beach) 시설에서도 사용되고 있다.

Cherokee Metropolitan water reclamation facility achieves a high water recovery rate of 90-95%

 

IDE Technologies, a leading global provider of water treatment solutions, today announced the Cherokee Metropolitan District water reuse installation is fully operational and producing a high water recovery rate of 90-95% with IDE’s Pulse Flow Reverse Osmosis (PFRO) technology. Originally constructed in 2010, the $45M project in southeast Colorado is a retrofitted and upgraded 4.8 MGD water reclamation facility designed to manage increasing raw wastewater total dissolved solids (TDS) levels and comply with the municipality’s decrease in permitted discharge limits.

The Cherokee Metropolitan District was experiencing raw water salinity levels exceeding 600 mg/L TDS and needed a solution to meet new discharge limits. After exploring several options, they decided to incorporate a new reverse osmosis process supplied by IDE. The plant included a headworks system with fine screening and grit removal, the conversion of two of the four existing SBRs to MBRs, and IDE’s high-recovery reverse osmosis (RO) system. The end result is a plant that uses 9 MGD MBR and a 1.6 MGD high-recovery RO system designed to enable RO permeate to be mixed with MBR filtrate, helping dilute the final effluent to below the 400 mg/L permit level.

IDE’s PFRO is a semi-batch process that implements alternating hydraulic and osmotic conditions to significantly reduce the tendency for scaling and biofouling. Its unique design eliminates the need for the three to four stages that are typically required to reach such high recovery rates. PFRO uses a single-stage RO that continuously changes the operation mode from dead-end filtration to brine discharge mode by opening and closing a brine valve – achieving 90-95% recovery rates with a silica concentration of more than 250 ppm in the brine stream. With high-recovery RO, Cherokee Metropolitan District was able to use the eastern half of its site for evaporation ponds in place of a deep well injection, a significant cost savings.

IDE’s PFRO technology is also in use at the Pismo Beach Plant in California.
