기후 혁신 기업인 트레인 테크놀로지스(Trane Technologies)는 11월 20일(현지시각) 저탄소 철강이 적용된 HVAC 장치 100만 대 이상을 미국 전역의 주택 소유주와 상업 고객에게 배송 지속가능한 기후 솔루션에 대한 목표를 발표했다.

미국의 주요 철강 제조업체 두 곳과 구매 계약을 체결한지 1년도 되지 않아, 트레인 테크놀로지스는 고효율 열펌프(High-Efficiency Heat Pumps)와 에어컨 등 저탄소 철강 제품을 통해 가정과 학교, 데이터 센터 및 병원에서 배출량을 줄일 수 있다.

키스 술타나(Keith Sultana) 트레인 테크놀로지스의 수석 부사장은 "전체 가치사슬을 탈탄소화하기 위해 혁신적인 조치를 계속 취하고 있는 가운데, 이 이정표는 넷제로(Net-Zero) 미래를 향한 여정에서 주목할 만한 단계를 강조한다"며 "보다 지속가능한 세상을 위해 도전하려는 목적에 따라 제품의 탄소와 추가적인 배출량, 환경 발자국을 줄이는 데 도움을 줄 수 있어 자랑스럽다"고 말했다.

현재 트레인 테크놀로지스의 연간 철강 구매량의 20%를 차지하는 저탄소 철강은 전기로에서 제조되고, 기존 용광로보다 탄소 집약도가 약 80% 낮다. 또한, 연간 약 1만6천 미터톤의 탄소를 줄일 것으로 예상되는데, 이는 1년 동안 2천 개 이상의 가정에 전력을 공급하며 발생되는 배출량과 동일하다.

스틸 제로(SteelZero)의 회원사인 트레인 테크놀로지는 2030년까지 50%, 2050년까지 100%의 순제로 철강을 달성할 것을 목표로 삼았다. 이 회사는 퍼스트 무버 연합(First Movers Coalition)의 창립 멤버다.

마이크 피어스(Mike Peirce) 클라이밋 그룹(Climate Group)의 시스템 변화 부문 전무 이사는 "철강 산업의 탈탄소화는 기후 행동을 가속화하는 데 중요하다"며 "스틸 제로 캠패인은 트레인 테크놀로지스와 같은 미래 지향적인 기업과 협력해 약속을 실천하고 책임감 있는 넷제로 미래 전환을 가속화하는 데 전념하고 있다"고 밝혔다.

트레인 테크놀로지스는 고객의 온실가스 배출량을 10억 미터톤(또는 1기가톤)을 줄이겠다는 공약인 기가톤 챌린지와 2050년까지 순제로화하겠다는 공약을 포함한 2030년 지속가능성 약속을 추진하고 있다. 

트레인 테크놀로지스는 2014년 예정보다 2년 앞당겨 달성하기 위한 혁신을 가속화하는 첫 번째 과학 기반 2020 기후 약속을 설정했다. 장기적인 배출량 감소 목표는 과학 기반 목표 이니셔티브(Science Based Targets Initiative, SBTi)로부터 외부적으로 검증됐다.

Trane Technologies Delivers on Low-Carbon Steel Commitment with 1M+ Sustainable HVAC Systems

One year after industry-first announcement, company is further reducing customers’ emissions and embodied carbon of products for homes, schools and data centers

 

SWORDS, Ireland-- Trane Technologies (NYSE: TT), a global climate innovator, today announced a significant milestone for its industry-leading, sustainable climate solutions – with more than one million HVAC units with low-carbon steel shipped to homeowners and commercial customers across the U.S. Less than one year after Trane Technologies established groundbreaking purchase agreements with two major U.S. steel manufacturers, the company’s low-carbon steel products – which include high-efficiency heat pumps and air conditioners – are enabling emission reductions in homes, schools, data centers and hospitals.

“As we continue taking bold, innovative action to decarbonize our entire value chain, this milestone highlights another remarkable step on our journey toward a net-zero future,” said Keith Sultana, senior vice president, global integrated supply chain, Trane Technologies. “Propelled by our purpose to challenge what’s possible for a more sustainable world, we are proud to lead our industry in reducing the embodied carbon of our products – enabling further emissions reductions for our customers and helping to lower their environmental footprints.”

Currently representing 20 percent of Trane Technologies’ annual steel purchase, the low-carbon steel, manufactured in an electric arc furnace and nearly 80 percent less carbon intensive than traditional blast furnace steel, is expected to reduce approximately 16,000 metric tons of carbon annually – the equivalent of emissions generated from powering more than 2,000 homes for one year. As a member of SteelZero, Trane Technologies pledges to procure, specify or stock 50 percent net-zero steel by 2030 and 100 percent net-zero by 2050. The company is also a founding member of the First Movers Coalition.

In 2014, the company set its first science-based 2020 Climate Commitments – accelerating innovation to achieve them two years ahead of schedule.
