깨끗한 연료 공급업체인 클린 에너지(Clean Energy Fuels Corp.)는 11월 21일(현지시각) 미국 메릴랜드주 볼티모어(Baltimore)에 새로운 재생 가능 천연가스(Renewable Natural Gas, RNG) 충전소를 개설했다고 발표했다.

RNG는 전적으로 유기성 폐기물로 만들어져 온실가스 배출을 크게 줄일 수 있다. 새로운 발전소는 풀라스키 산업 지역(Pulaski Industrial Area) 근처에 있으며, 혼잡한 동부 해안 트럭 운송 회랑에서 대형 트럭 차량이 저탄소 지속 가능 연료를 이용할 수 있도록 한다.

이 충전소는 2024년 커민스(Cummins) X15N 천연가스 엔진의 도입으로 RNG가 대형차량 분야에서 탄력을 받고 있는 시기에 개설됐다. 새로운 15리터 엔진은 현재 월마트(Walmart), 베르너(Werner), 나이트 스위프트(Knight Swift), UPS 등 가장 크고 까다로운 소수의 차량에서 시험되고 있다. 대형 트럭 시장이 탈탄소화를 위한 저렴하고 신뢰 가능한 대안을 찾기 위해 고군분투하는 시점에서 X15N에 대한 초기 반응은 매우 긍정적인 것으로 나타났다.

채드 린드홀름(Chad Lindholm) 클린 에너지의 수석 부사장은 "RNG로 연료를 공급하는 대형 차량은 특히 중장비 트럭 분야에서 즉각적이고 상당한 탄소 감축을 실현할 수 있다"며 "메릴랜드와 미국 전역의 다른 지역에 우리 충전소를 개설한 것은 온실가스 배출을 줄이고 오늘날 이용할 수 있는 저렴하고 깨끗한 연료에 대한 수요를 충족한다"고 밝혔다.

볼티모어에 있는 이 충전소는 약 20에이커에 달하며, RNG를 쉽게 운송할 수 있도록 4개의 급속 충전 디스펜서를 보유하고 있다. 또한, 최대 156대의 트럭을 수용할 수 있는 전용 시간 보충 호스는 비용 효율적인 연료를 공급하고 고객에게 실시간 데이터를 전송하는 최첨단 기술을 사용한다.

이 충전소는 개인 차량을 위한 156대의 추가 주차 공간을 확보하고 있다. 볼티모어는 수백만 달러의 투자를 통해 깨끗하고 지속 가능한 연료 공급의 중심지로 거듭날 것으로 기대된다.

클린 에너지는 현재 북미 전역에 590개의 주유소 네트워크를 보유하고 있으며, 대형 트럭을 위해  건설한 주유소를 확장하고 있다.

클린 에너지는 낙농장에서 RNG 생산에 상당한 투자를 진행하고 있다.

미국 환경보호청(EPA)에 따르면 농업은 미국 온실가스 배출량의 약 10%를 차지하고, 운송 및 수송 부문은 28%를 차지한다. 농장 폐기물에서 메탄을 포집할 시 이러한 배출량을 줄일 수 있다.

메탄을 포집해 수송 연료로 사용되는 RNG는 디젤과 비교할 때 수명 주기 기준으로 온실가스 배출량을 크게 감소시킨다. 이를 통해 RNG는 배출원과 차량에서의 배출량 감소를 기준으로 마이너스 탄소 집약도 점수를 받은 유일한 운송연료 중 하나가 될 수 있다.

한편, 클린 에너지는 운송 시장에 깨끗한 연료를 공급하는 미국 공급업체로, 유기 폐기물에서 파생된 지속 가능 연료인 RNG의 개발 및 공급을 통해 운송 과정을 탈탄소화하는 것을 목표로 한다.

Clean Energy Opens Renewable Natural Gas Fueling Station in Baltimore

Station to Provide a Clean, Low-Carbon Alternative and Is Part of Growing National Fueling Network for the Heavy-Duty Market

 

Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (NASDAQ: CLNE), the largest provider of the cleanest fuel for the transportation market, announced today the opening of a new renewable natural gas (RNG) station in Baltimore. RNG is made entirely of organic waste and dramatically reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The new station is strategically located near the Pulaski Industrial Area and provides heavy-duty truck fleets access to a low carbon, sustainable fuel in the busy east coast trucking corridor.

The station opening comes at a time when RNG is gaining momentum in the heavy-duty vehicle space with the introduction of the Cummins X15N natural gas engine in 2024. The new 15-liter engine is currently being tested by a handful of the largest and most demanding fleets in the country, such as Walmart, Werner, Knight Swift, and UPS. The early reaction to the X15N has been very positive at a time when the heavy-duty truck market continues to struggle to find affordable and reliable alternatives to decarbonize their fleets.

“Large fleets fueling with RNG have the ability to realize immediate and significant carbon reduction, especially in the heavy-duty truck sector,” said Chad Lindholm, senior vice president of Clean Energy. “The opening of our station in Maryland and others around the country demonstrates the demand for an affordable, clean fuel that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and is available today.”

The new station, located at 6820 Quad Avenue in Baltimore, sits on almost 20 acres and includes four fast-fill dispensers for easy in-and-out fueling of RNG; private time-fill hoses for up to 156 trucks, which allows for cost-effective fueling and the most advanced technology transmitting real-time data to customers; and 156 additional parking places for drivers’ personal vehicles. The multi-million dollar investment in the Baltimore area will put it on the map as a hub for clean, sustainable fueling.

Clean Energy currently has a network of 590 fueling stations around North America and is steadily expanding that number with stations purposely built and strategically located for heavy-duty truck fleets.

Clean Energy is also making substantial investments in the production of RNG at dairy farms. Agriculture accounts for nearly 10% of U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the transportation sector accounts for another 28%, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Capturing methane from farm waste lowers these emissions. RNG, produced by that captured methane and used as a transportation fuel, significantly lowers GHG emissions on a lifecycle basis when compared to diesel. This allows RNG to be one of the only transportation fuels to receive a negative carbon-intensity score based on the reduction of emissions at the source and at the vehicle.
