[스리랑카] IWMI, MENA지역 물재사용 위해 AI 및 위성 데이터 활용하는 새로운 구글 지원 도구 개발

IWMI, 구글 자선단체서 100만달러 지원받아 MENA지역 하·폐수 재사용 개선 위해 ‘e-ReWater’라는 새로운 AI 기반 플랫폼 개발 계획

스리랑카 콜롬보에 있는 개발도상국에 관개에 관련한 기술 지원 및 물관리, 홍수관리 등에 대한 연구를 진행하는 국제물관리연구소(International Water Management Institute, 이하 IWMI)는 구글(Google)의 자선단체인 Google.org에서 100만 달러의 보조금을 지원받아 중동 및 북아프리카 지역(Middle East and North Africa Region, 이하 MENA)의 하·폐수 재사용을 개선하기 위해 ‘e-ReWater’라는 새로운 AI 기반 플랫폼을 개발할 계획을 11월 27일 발표했다. 

이 보조금은 IWMI 연구원들이 원격 감지 기술을 사용하여 육지, 바다 및 대기를 모니터링하는 인공지능 및 지구 관측 데이터를 기반으로 하는 플랫폼인 ‘e-ReWater’를 개발하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다.

위성의 도움으로 새로운 수자원의 가용성을 추정하고 물 재사용을 개선하는 데 도움이 된다. 이는 MENA 지역의 물부족으로 인한 영향을 줄여 식량과 물 안보를 개선할 수 있다.

MENA는 세계에서 가장 물이 부족한 지역 중 하나이다. 인구 증가와 기후변화의 영향 증가로 인해 물 부족이 계속해서 악화되고 있다. 재활용된 물은 지하수 추출물의 담수화에 비해 여러가지 이점을 제공하지만, 최근 연구에 따르면 이 지역은 영양이 풍부한 하·폐수의 최소 54%를 잃고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

이 프로젝트의 일환으로 IWMI 연구원들은 이집트, 사우디아라비아, 아랍에미리트(UAE)의 하·폐수 발생 및 재활용 잠재력에 대한 접근 가능하고 포괄적인 정보를 제공하는 온라인 대시보드도 개발할 예정이다.

유틸리티 관리자, 정책 입안자 및 일반 대중을 위해 개발된 대시보드는 물 재사용과 관련된  정보에 대한 더 나은 접근을 제공함으로써 지역 전체의 기후 탄력성과 완화 노력을 강화하는 데 도움이 될 것이다.

3개년 프로젝트는 하·폐수 정보에 대한 접근성을 향상하고 국가연구기관의 직원 역량을 강화할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 또한 다양한 부문에서 하·폐수 재사용 가능성을 확인하고 현재 많은 사람들의 수원인 지하수 사용을 줄일 수 있다.

이번 발표에 대해 Google의 유럽 및 중동·북아프리카 지역(Europe, Middle East and Africa, EMEA) 지속가능성 책임자인 아담 엘만(Adam Elman)은 “물부족은 중동 및 북아프리카에 거주하는 사람들이 직면한 가장 중요한 환경 문제 중 하나이다”라면서 “물 재사용을 개선하기 위해 AI를 사용하려는 IWMI의 노력을 지원함으로써 우리는 이집트, UAE 및 사우디아라비아 사람들을 돕는 것을 목표로 삼고 있다”고 강조했다.

IWMI의 레이첼 맥도넬(Rachael McDonnell) 부국장은 “물이 부족한 국가들이 기후변화에 적응하도록 돕기 위해서는 가능한 모든 물 공급원을 사용하는 것이 중요하다”라고 말했다.

맥도넬 부국장은 이어 “이 새로운 데이터 도구는 물 관리자가 미래 관리 계획에 재활용수를 도입하여 일부 사용자의 물 스트레스를 완화하는 데 도움이 될 것”이라면서 MENA 지역 및 그 외 지역 정부의 요청에 부응하는 획기적인 도구를 개발하기 위해 Google.org와 IWMI의 강점을 결합하게 되어 기쁘게 생각한다”라고 덧붙였다.

재활용된 물은 날씨 변화, 특히 강우량에 영향을 받지 않기 때문에 지역에서 가장 많은 물을 사용하는 농업부문, 산업 및 환경에 신뢰할 수 있는 물 공급원을 제공할 수 있다. 이 자원은 담수화나 장거리 물 이동보다 낮은 투자비용과 에너지 사용으로 종종 이용 가능하다.

IWMI announces development of a new, Google supported tool that will harness AI and satellite data for water reuse in the Middle East and North Africa

 

A new grant from Google’s philanthropic arm will help researchers develop a tool to bolster water security and climate resilience in the Middle East and North Africa.

Today, IWMI announced plans to develop a new AI-powered platform, called e-ReWater, to improve wastewater reuse in the Middle East and North Africa Region (MENA), backed by US $1 million in grant funding from Google.org, Google’s philanthropy.

The grant will support researchers at IWMI as they develop e-ReWater, a platform powered by artificial intelligence and earth observation data which uses remote sensing technologies to monitor land, seas and the atmosphere. 

With help from satellites, it will help estimate the availability of new water resources and improve water reuse. This will reduce the impact of water scarcity in the MENA region, improving food and water security.

MENA is one of the most water-scarce regions of the world. Growing populations and the increasing impacts of climate change continue to exacerbate water scarcity. While recycled water offers multiple benefits compared to desalination of groundwater abstraction, a recent study indicates that this region is losing at least 54% of the nutrient-rich wastewater.

As part of this project, researchers from IWMI will also develop an online dashboard that will provide accessible and comprehensive information on wastewater generation and recycling potential in Egypt, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. 

The dashboard, which is developed for utility managers, policymakers and the wider public, will help bolster climate resilience and mitigation efforts across the region by providing better access to information around water reuse.

The three-year project presents an opportunity to improve access to wastewater information and strengthen the capacity of staff at national research institutions. It will also identify the potential of wastewater reuse in different sectors and lead to reductions in groundwater use, the current source of water for many.

Commenting on the announcement, Adam Elman, Head of Regional Sustainability, EMEA at Google, said “Water scarcity is one of the most critical environmental issues facing people living in the Middle East & North Africa. By supporting IWMI’s efforts to use AI in order to improve water reuse, we’re aiming to help people in Egypt, the UAE and Saudi Arabia”

“To help water-scarce countries adapt to climate change it is important to use all possible sources of water,” said Rachael McDonnell, Deputy Director General of IWMI. 

“This new data tool will help water managers bring recycled water into their future management plans to ease water stress for some users. We are excited to bring together the strengths of Google.org and IWMI to develop this game-changing tool that responds to requests from governments in the MENA region and beyond.”

Recycled water can provide a reliable source of water for agriculture - the sector using the most water in the region - industry and the environment, as it is not affected by variations in weather, particularly rainfall. This resource is also often available at lower investment costs and energy use than desalination or long-distance water transfers.
