물과 폐수 유틸리티를 포함한 모든 부문에서 배출 감소의 중요성이 커짐에 따라, 기후 지도자들은 두바이에서 열리는 유엔 기후 회의(COP28)에 모였다.

수도 유틸리티는 그 어느 때보다도 온실가스(GHG) 배출을 줄이기 위한 노력을 가속화해야 한다. 

미국 물 연합(US Water Alliance)은 물 연구 재단(The Water Research Foundation , WRF)이 물 유틸리티가 기후 영향을 측정하고, 탄소중립 목표를 달성하기 위한 진행 상황을 파악할 수 있도록 돕는 프로젝트를 주도하게 돼 자랑스럽다고 밝혔다.

기후 위기를 해결하기 위해서는 탄소중립으로의 전환을 서두르기 위한 집단 행동이 필요하다. 

물 부문은 배출을 해결하기 위한 조치를 취한면서, 자연 기반 솔루션, 에너지 회수 및 자원 순환과 같은 One Water 관리 접근 방식을 통해 지역 사회가 설정한 야심차고 효과적인 기후 목표를 달성하는 데 중추적인 역할을 할 수 있다. 

기후 행동의 필요성이 전 세계적으로 증가함에 따라, 포괄적이고 접근 가능한 도구를 통해 물 부문 온실가스(GHG) 추적을 가능하게 하는 것이 필수적이다.

마미 하라(Mami Hara) 미국 물 연합의 CEO는 “물 유틸리티는 증가하는 기후 위기에 영향을 받을 뿐만 아니라 기후 위기를 해결하고 모든 지역 사회가 번창할 수 있도록 돕는 데 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다”고 말했다. 

그는 “이 프로젝트는 물 유틸리티가 탄소중립 미래를 달성하기 위해 배출량을 줄일 수 있도록 돕는 중요한 단계이다”라고 덧붙였다.

물 부문의 온실가스 측정을 위한 합의 기반 방법론과 오픈 소스 도구를 개발하기 위해, 물 연합은 프로젝트를 안내하고 기여할 유틸리티 실무자, 기술 전문가 및 학술 연구원으로 구성된 뛰어난 팀을 구성했다. 

프린스턴 대학교, 브라운과 콜드웰, CDM 스미스, 코발트 워터 글로벌, GHD, 제이콥스, 노던 틸스, 스탠텍을 포함하는 이 팀은 광범위한 적용 가능성을 보장하기 위해 유틸리티 파트너의 피드백을 수집해 GHG 배출량을 계산하기 위한 사용자 친화적인 산업 전반의 지침과 오픈 액세스 도구를 개발한다.

피터 그레바트(Dr. Peter Grevatt) 박사, 물 연구 재단의 CEO는 “현재 온실가스 배출원을 이해하는 것은 기후 변화 영향을 완화하기 위해 노력하는 물과 폐수 유틸리티에 중요한 단계이다”라고 말했다.

US Water Alliance to Lead Project to Advance Climate Action in Water Sector

 

As climate leaders converge for the United Nations Climate Conference (COP28) in Dubai, the urgency for immediate, deep emissions reductions across all sectors, including water and wastewater utilities, is clear. Now more than ever, water utilities must rise to the occasion and accelerate efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In recognition of this urgency, the US Water Alliance is proud to announce its selection by The Water Research Foundation (WRF) to spearhead a groundbreaking project to help water utilities measure their climate impact and communicate progress toward achieving net-zero targets.

Addressing the climate crisis requires urgent collective action to hasten the transition to net zero. While the water sector must take action to address its emissions, it also can play a pivotal role in helping reach ambitious and effective climate goals set by communities through One Water management approaches such as nature-based solutions, energy recovery, and resource circularity. With the needed global increase in climate action, it is imperative to enable water sector GHG tracking through comprehensive and accessible tools.

“Water utilities are not only impacted by our growing climate crisis; they can play a major role in helping solve the climate crisis and ensure all communities can thrive,” says US Water Alliance CEO, Mami Hara. “This project is a vital step that will allow water utilities to do their part in reducing emissions to achieve a net-zero future.”

To develop consensus-based methodologies and open-source tools for GHG accounting in the water sector, the Alliance has assembled an exceptional team of utility practitioners, technical experts, and academic researchers who will help guide and contribute to the project. The team—which includes Princeton University, Brown and Caldwell, CDM Smith, Cobalt Water Global, GHD, Jacobs, Northern Tilth, and Stantec—will develop user-friendly industry-wide guidance and an open-access tool for calculating GHG emissions by gathering feedback from utility partners to ensure its broad applicability.

“Understanding current greenhouse gas emission sources is a vital step for water and wastewater utilities working to mitigate climate change impacts,” says Dr. Peter Grevatt, CEO of The Water Research Foundation. “We are excited to work with the US Water Alliance’s strong cross-sector team to develop international, industry-wide consensus around GHG accounting and methodologies.”
