수십억 리터의 물을 절약하기 위해 인공지능(Artificial intelligence, AI)을 사용하는 회사가 기술을 더욱 향상시키기 위해 웨스트스코틀랜드대학교(University of the West of Scotland , UWS)와 파트너십을 맺었다.

AI를 이용한 누수탐사기술(FIDO AI 시스템)을 개발한 영국의 FIDO 테크(FIDO Tech)는 영국 수자원을 보호하고 호주, 미국, 태국 등의 지역사회 물공급을 보호하기 위해 유틸리티 회사와 협력하여 전 세계 물부족 및 제한으로 영향을 받는 지역사회를 돕고 있다.

호주 토레스해협(Torres Strait)에 있는 머레이 섬(Murray Island)의 외딴 지역사회는 ‘FIDO AI 시스템’을 사용하여 토레스해협 지역협의회와 글로벌 인프라 자산관리회사인 에셋 라이프 알리언스(Asset Life Alliance)를 포함한 여러 기술과 파트너를 통합하여 20여년 만에 심각한 물 제한이 해제되었다.

유네스코(UNESCO)는 누수를 줄이는 것이 기후변화에 대한 ‘후회가 적거나 없는 대응(low or no regrets)’이라고 불렀는데, 이는 유엔의 지속가능한 개발목표(Sustainable Development Goals)의 6번 째(SDG6) 목표인 ‘깨끗한 물과 모두를 위한 위생(clean water and sanitation)’과 관련이 있기 때문이다.

FIDO 테크(FIDO Tech)의 빅토리아 에드워즈(Victoria Edwards) CEO는 “전 세계 수돗물 의 최소 3분의 1이 누수로 인해 손실된다. 이것은 비극이지만 놀라운 기회이기도 하다. 누수는 값싸고 탄소가 적은 물 공급원이지만 지금까지는 항상 ‘하기에는 너무 어려운(too hard to do)’ 상자에 있었다“고 말했다.

에드워즈 CEO는 특히 “FIDO AI와 같은 새로운 파괴적인 기술은 누수와 수익이 없는 물을 줄이고 공동체들이 물이 바닥나는 날인 ‘Day Zero’를 향해 우리 공동체를 몰아가고 있는 기후변화 재앙에 도전하는 유일한 방법이다”라고 강조했다.

웨스트스코틀랜드대학교의 부총장인 제임스 밀러(James Miller) 교수는 “기후변화가 전 세계적으로 계속해서 재앙적인 영향을 미치고 있는 가운데, 국제적으로 영향력이 있는 강력한 협력을 육성하고 그 힘을 활용해야 할 필요성이 그 어느 때보다 커졌다”라면서 “글로벌 과제를 해결하기 위한 연구와 신기술의 집약체”라고 말했다.

이 획기적인 시스템은 수전(Water Hydrant)과 같은 자산에 작은 센서를 배치하고 휴대폰에서 사용자 친화적인 애플리케이션에 액세스하여 동시 측정값을 수집하고 자동처리를 위해 업로드하는 방식으로 작동한다.

이 기술은 UWS(웨스트스코틀랜드대학교)와 협력하여 개발된 혁신적인 AI를 사용하여 수초 내에 정확한 누수 위치를 음향적으로 매핑하는 간단하고 효과적인 클라우드 상관 방식(cloud correlation method)을 제공한다.

UWS의 연구·혁신 및 참여담당 부총장인 밀란 라도사블레비치(Milan Radosavljevic) 교수는 “이 프로젝트는 산업계와 학계가 협력할 때 무엇을 달성할 수 있는지 보여주는 예”라면서 “선구적인 프로젝트는 지역사회가 번영할 수 있도록 실질적인 변화를 가져올 뿐만 아니라 UN 지속가능 개발목표(SDGs)를 달성하는 데 크게 기여하고 있다”고 말했다.

이 기술은 누수감지 및 완화 조치의 일환으로 전 세계 기업에서 사용되고 있다. FIDO Tech와 UWS는 영국 혁신청(Innovate UK)을 통해 자금이 지원되는 지식 이전 파트너십(Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, KTP) 프로그램을 통해 협력했다.

AI가 물관리에 미치는 영향은 더욱 확대될 것으로 예상된다. 기술이 발전함에 따라 AI 시스템은 더욱 정교해지고 전반적인 물 인프라 관리를 향상시킬 수 있다.

UWS 컴퓨팅·공학 및 물리과학대학의 무함마드 지샨 샤키르(Muhammad Zeeshan Shakir) 교수는 “이 프로젝트는 AI와 감지 기술의 생명을 바꿀 수 있는 잠재력과 물과 같은 우리의 천연자원을 보호하고 혁신적인 해결책이 필요한 지역사회를 돕기 위해 어떻게 배치될 수 있는지를 보여준다”고 강조했다.

그는 이어 “이 기술이 UN SDG6(물 안보)에 직접적인 영향을 미치고 중대한 과제를 해결하는 것을 보는 것은 매우 흥미롭다. 업계 최고의 KTP(지식 이전 파트너십) 프로그램을 통해 FIDO Tech와 계속 협력하게 되어 기쁘게 생각한다”고 덧붙였다.

Artificial intelligence tackling global water shortages

 

A company using artificial intelligence (AI) to save billions of litres of water has partnered with University of the West of Scotland (UWS) to further enhance its technology. 

FIDO Tech are helping communities affected by water shortages and restrictions around the world - working with utility companies to protect UK resources and protecting water supplies for communities in Australia, America, Thailand and beyond. 

The remote community of Murray Island, in the Torres Strait, Australia, utilised the FIDO AI system, as part of an integrated leak detection strategy which incorporated multiple technologies and partners - including Torres Strait Regional Council and global infrastructure asset management company, Asset Life Alliance - resulting in severe water restrictions being lifted for the first time in more than 20 years.

UNESCO called reducing water leaks a “low or no regrets” response to climate change because it ties into adaptation and mitigation, with clean water and sanitation for all being Goal 6 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Ninety percent of underground pipe leaks never show above ground and around 30% of the world’s treated drinking water is lost from pipeline networks before it ever reaches our taps.

Victoria Edwards, CEO, FIDO Tech, said: “At least a third of the world’s piped water is lost to leaks. This is a tragedy, but it is also an amazing opportunity. Leakage is a cheap, low-carbon source of water but until now it has always been in the ‘too hard to do’ box. New disruptive technologies like FIDO AI are the only way to drive down leakage and non-revenue water and to challenge the climate change disaster that is pushing our communities towards Day Zero; the day communities run out of water.”

Professor James Miller, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of University of the West of Scotland, added: “As climate change continues to have a catastrophic effect across the globe, there has never been a greater need to foster powerful internationally impactful collaborations and harness the power of research and new technologies to address global challenges.”

The groundbreaking system works by placing a small sensor on an asset - such as a water hydrant - and through accessing a user-friendly application on a mobile phone, simultaneous measurements are collected and uploaded for auto processing. 

The technology provides a simple and effective cloud correlation method, using innovative AI developed in collaboration with UWS, to acoustically map the exact location of the leak, within seconds.

Professor Milan Radosavljevic, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Engagement at UWS, said: “This project is an exemplar of what can be achieved when industry and academia collaborate.

“The pioneering project is making a real difference to communities being able to thrive as well as contributing significantly to addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The technology is being used by companies worldwide as part of their water leak detection and mitigation measures. FIDO Tech and UWS worked together through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership programme, funded through Innovate UK.

The impact of AI on water management is expected to expand further. As technology advances, AI systems will become more sophisticated, and capable of enhancing overall water infrastructure management.

Professor Muhammad Zeeshan Shakir, of UWS’s School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences, added: “This project shows the life-changing potential of AI and sensing technology and how it can be deployed to protect our natural resources, such as water, and help communities who are in need of innovative solutions.

“It’s exciting to see the technology making a direct impact and solving grand challenges, addressing UN SDG 6 - water security. We are delighted to be continuing to work with FIDO Tech, through our sector leading KTP programme.”
