그린란드 리소시스(Greenland Resources Inc.)는 12월 18일 탈탄소화를 위한 풍력 및 태양광 발전에 대한 'Malmbjerg 몰리브덴 프로젝트(Malmbjerg Molybdenum Project)'의 재생 에너지 보고서를 글로벌 엔지니어링 컨설팅 기업체인 코비(COWI)로부터 받았다고 발표했다.

이 프로젝트에서 재생 에너지의 활용은 그린란드의 일자리와 주요 인프라에 도움이 될 것이다. 이 프로젝트는 그린란드와 유럽연합(EU)이 최근 체결한 전략적이고 지속가능한 원자재 프로젝트 개발 및 개발에 필요한 인프라 구축에 관한 협약에 따른 것이다.

현재 프로젝트의 총 전력 소비와 탈탄소화의 약 50%는 공중 로프 컨베이어를 사용해 해결된다. 이 컨베이어는 에너지 투입이 필요하지 않은 중력을 사용함으로써 하루 3만5천톤의 광석을 광산 현장에서 처리 시설로 운반해 탄소 배출 없이 전기를 생산한다. 

코비의 보고서는 광산 현장 내 풍력과 태양 에너지 생산을 혼합할 때 총 전력 소비의 약 35%를 탈탄소화해 노르웨이 북부의 하베가블렌(Havøygavlen) 섬과 유사한 조건과 위도에서 운영되는 기존 풍력 발전단지와 비슷한 수준인 약 33MW의 최대 전력을 제공할 수 있다고 밝혔다. 총 전력 소비의 15%는 탄소 포집 기술 및 대체 친환경 연료로 탈탄소화할 수 있는 잠재성을 가진다. 

옌스 호이고르 크리스토퍼슨(Jens Højgaard Christoffersen) 코비의 회장은 "우수성에 대한 노력의 일환으로 그린란드 리소시스의 목표와 함께 까다로운 북극 조건에서 재생 에너지를 혁신적으로 사용할 수 있는 길을 열고자 한다"며 "자연을 존중하고 그린란드 국민의 복지를 우선시하는 친환경 산업 개발의 선례를 만드는 것을 목표로 한다"고 말했다.

루벤 쉬프만(Ruben Shiffman) 그린란드 리소시스의 집행위원장은 "지속 가능성에 대한 엄격한 목표를 세우고 전 세계적으로 탄소 발자국이 가장 적은 몰리브덴 광산 중 하나를 이루기 위해 노력하고 있다"며 "지난해 덴마크에서는 3천100개 이상의 풍력 터빈이 제조되고, 각 터빈에는 설치 용량(MW)당 100kg 이상의 몰리브덴(Molybdenum)을 포함한다"고 말했다.

쉬프만 집행위원장은 이어 "전반적으로 이 프로젝트는 유럽연합 내 총 몰리브덴 수요의 25%를 공급할 수 있는 잠재력을 가지고 있다"며 "유럽연합은 세계에서 두 번째로 큰 몰리브덴 사용자임에도 몰리브덴 생산시설을 구축하지 않고 있다"고 덧붙였다. 

한편, 그린란드 리소시스는 온타리오 증권 위원회((Ontario Securities Commission)를 주요 규제 기관으로 둔 캐나다 상장 기업으로, 그린란드 동부 및 중부에 위치한 순수 몰리브덴 광산 개발에 주력하고 있다. 맘저그 몰리브덴 프로젝트는 모듈화된 인프라로 인한 물 사용량 감소, 탄소 발자국 감소 등에 중점을 두고 환경 친화적인 광산 설계를 갖춘 광산 작업이다.

Greenland Resources Strengthens Malmbjerg Sustainability With COWI

 

Greenland Resources Inc. (NEO: MOLY | FSE: M0LY) (“Greenland Resources” or the “Company”) is pleased to announce that it received a positive renewable energy report (the “Report”) from COWI A/S (“COWI”), on wind and solar power generation to further decarbonize the Malmbjerg Molybdenum Project (the “Project”). Utilization of renewable energy at the Project will also help the country with jobs and critical infrastructure and is aligned with the recently signed agreement between Greenland and the European Union (“EU”) on developing strategic sustainable raw materials projects and deploying infrastructure required to develop them.

Currently, approximately 50% of the total power consumption and decarbonization in the Project is solved with the use of the aerial rope conveyor. The conveyor transports 35,000 tonnes of ore per day from the mine site to the processing facilities using gravity that requires no energy input and therefore generates no carbon emissions and generates electricity from braking. The COWI Report concludes that a mix of onshore wind and solar energy production near the mine site can decarbonize some 35% of total power consumption giving an approximately 33MW of peak power, similar to the existing wind farm operating in comparable arctic conditions and latitude on Havøygavlen island in the north of Norway. The remaining 15% of the total power consumption has the potential to be decarbonized with carbon capture technologies or alternative green fuel. The Report also estimates economics and investigates the owned and leased model.

Executive Chairman Dr. Ruben Shiffman noted, “We are setting strict sustainability goals and have a clear path to become one of the lowest carbon footprint molybdenum mines worldwide, where COWI will play an important role. Over 3,100 wind turbines were manufactured last year in Denmark, each of them containing over 100 kg of molybdenum per MW installed capacity, which makes Denmark one of the largest per capita users of molybdenum worldwide. This combined with the interest we received from Danish molybdenum end users and mining equipment providers increases the Danish content in our Project. Overall, our Project has the potential to supply 25% of total molybdenum demand in and for the EU. The EU is the second largest molybdenum user worldwide and has no molybdenum production.”
