[미국] 메트로폴리탄, DPR 공법 위한 새로운 규정 채택 성명서 발표

퓨어 워터 서던 캘리포니아 개발 추진해 1천900만 명에 혜택 제공

생산된 정수, 지하수 보충 위해 사용…DPR 처리과정 거쳐 전달 예정

 

메트로폴리탄 워터 디스트릭트(Metropolitan Water District, MWD)는 12월 19일(현지시각) 캘리포니아주 수자원 관리 위원회(the State Water Resources Control Board)가 직접음용(Direct Potable Reuse, DPR)에 관한 규정을 채택한 것에 대해 다음과 같은 성명을 발표했다. [사진제공 = Metropolitan Water District)]

 

메트로폴리탄 워터 디스트릭트(Metropolitan Water District, MWD)는 12월 19일(현지시각) 캘리포니아주 수자원 관리 위원회(the State Water Resources Control Board)가 직접음용(Direct Potable Reuse, DPR)에 관한 규정을 채택한 것에 대해 다음과 같은 성명을 발표했다. 

아델 헤이그할릴(Adel Hagekhalil) 메트로폴리탄 워터 디스트릭트의 총괄 책임자는 "공중 보건과 안전을 최우선 순위로 삼고 물 재사용을 한 단계 발전시키는 조치를 취한 주 위원회에 감사드린다"며 "이러한 새로운 규정은 기후변화에 직면할 때 물 관리자에게 중요한 도구를 제공한다"고 말했다.

헤이그할릴 총괄 책임자는 "이를 통해 메트로폴리탄은 세계에서 가장 큰 물 재활용 시설이 될 퓨어 워터 서던 캘리포니아(Pure Water Southern California)의 개발을 추진하고 1천900만 명에게 혜택을 줄 것"이라며 "중요한 것은 이러한 규정이 퓨어 워터 시설(Pure Water Facility)을 관리하는 방법에 유연성을 부여한다는 점"이라고 덧붙였다.

그는 "생산된 정수의 일부는 지하수 보충을 위해 사용될 것이고, 또 다른 일부는 추가적인 DPR 처리 과정을 거쳐 지역 전역에 추가 처리 및 공급을 위해 1~2개의 수처리 공장으로 전달된다"며 "이러한 유연성 덕분에 남부 캘리포니아는 건기 동안 안정적인 물공급을 보장하고 우기에 물을 최대한 활용할 수 있다"고 강조했다.

그는 또한 "이 새로운 규정은 퓨어 워터 캘리포니아와 같이 이미 개발 중인 대규모 물 재활용 프로젝트를 발전시키는 데 도움이 될 뿐만 아니라, 주 전역의 물 관리자가 아직 고려되지 않은 새로운 프로젝트에 대해 고려할 수 있도록 해줄 것"이라며 "물 재사용은 우리 주의 공급 신뢰성에 훨씬 더 필수적인 부분으로 자리매김할 것"이라고 밝혔다.

Metropolitan issues statement on adoption of new regulations for Direct Potable Reuse

 

LOS ANGELES-Adel Hagekhalil, general manager of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, issues the following statement on the State Water Resources Control Board adoption of regulations on Direct Potable Reuse

“We’re grateful to the state board for taking this important step that advances water reuse to the next level while making public health and safety the top priority. These new regulations give water managers a critical new tool as we confront the challenges of climate change. They will enable Metropolitan to advance development of Pure Water Southern California, which will be one of the largest water recycling facilities in the world and benefit 19 million people in our service area. Importantly, these regulations will give us additional flexibility in how we manage our Pure Water facility. A portion of the purified water produced will be used for groundwater replenishment, while a portion will go through an additional DPR treatment process, then be delivered to one or two of our water treatment plants for further treatment and delivery across the region. This flexibility will allow us to ensure Southern California has a reliable water supply in dry years, while taking full advantage of water available in wet years.

“Not only will these new regulations help advance large-scale water recycling projects already in development, like Pure Water Southern California, they will enable water managers across the state to consider new projects that have not yet been contemplated. Water reuse will become an even more integral part of our state’s supply reliability.”
