[미국] 클린 얼스, 미 국방부와 협업해 PFAS 개선 방안 연구

환경 및 규제 폐기물 관리 서비스의 선도적인 제공업체인 클린 얼스(Clean Earth)는 PFAS의 교정 기술을 시연하기 위한 시제품 프로젝트의 일환으로 미국 국방부(DoD)에 의해 선정됐다.

국방부는 보도자료에서 이 프로젝트를 “다양한 시나리오에 대한 상업적 PFAS 처리 옵션을 제공하기 위한 노력의 주요 단계”라고 밝혔다. 

클린 얼스가 이 프로젝트에 참여함으로써 미국 정부는 그들의 역량과 회사의 시설 네트워크, 물류 역량 및 지속적으로 확장되는 PFAS 관리 기술의 툴박스에 대해 자세히 이해한다.

제프 베즈윅(Jeff Beswick) 클린 얼스 회장은 “이 프로젝트는 우선순위가 높은 프로젝트이며, 이러한 프로세스가 PFAS를 어떻게 해결할 수 있는지 지원하고 시연할 준비가 되어 있다“라며 “이 프로젝트에서 클린 얼스는 DoD의 허브로서 전략적 개선 접근 방식을 알려준다”고 말했다.

클린 얼스를 비롯한 아쿠아카(Aquagga), 아르카디스(Arcadis), 374워터(374 Water), 바텔(Battelle), 제너럴 아토믹스(General Atomics) 등 5개 기업은 펜실베니아주에 있는 두 곳의 국방부기지, 해군 비행장 합동 예비 기지 윌로우 그로브(Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Willow Grove) 및 해군 항공국 합동 예비 기지 호샴 타운샴(Biddle Air National Guard Base, Horsham Townsham)에서 수집한 PFAS 영향을 받은 폐기물의 복구 작업에 참여할 예정이다. 폐기물은 클린 얼스의 오프사이트에서 처리된다. 

크레이그 디바인(Craig Divine) 수석 부사장 겸 프로젝트 수석 조사관은 "이 협업은 흥미진진한 기술, 세계적 수준의 전문 지식, 스케일업 및 가속화된 상업화를 위한 실용적 전략의 시너지 효과를 보여준다"라며 "이 중추적인 프로젝트의 구현 및 성능 분석을 조정하는 과정에서 Arcadis는 클린 얼스 및 374워터(374Wate)r와 협력해 PFAS 오염 문제를 해결할 수 있는 고급 및 비용 효율적인 솔루션을 제공하는 것을 자랑스럽게 생각합니다." 

크레이그 부사장은 이어 "클린 어스의 리졸브(ReSolve™) 프로그램은 PFAS로 오염된 토양과 물을 처리하기 위한 다양한 방법을 테스트했다"며 "50개 주 전체를 대상으로 하는 작업을 통해 클린 얼스는 현장 PFAS 복구를 지원하거나 당사 시설 중 한 곳에서 오프사이트로 처리한다. 단기적인 해결책보다는 고객의 장기적인 위험을 최소화하는 지속 가능한 솔루션을 구현하는 데 전념하고 있다" 고 말했다.

Clean Earth Joins in Department of Defense Study for PFAS Remediation

Clean Earth will partner with the U.S. Department of Defense in a critical PFAS remediation study.

Clean Earth is a leading authority in PFAS with more than three decades of expertise in environmental management, clean up, and remediation.

 

Clean Earth, a division of Enviri Corporation (NYSE: NVRI) and a leading provider of environmental and regulated waste management services, has been tapped by the U.S. Department of Defense (“DoD”) as part of a prototype project to demonstrate remediation technologies for PFAS, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. 

In its press release, the DoD calls the project “a major step forward in the effort to provide [it] with commercial PFAS treatment options for a variety of scenarios.” Clean Earth’s engagement in this project positions it to help the U.S. Government better understand its capabilities and dovetails with the company’s network of facilities, logistics capabilities, and ever-expanding toolbox of PFAS management technologies.  

"This proof of concept will demonstrate our team’s capability to successfully remediate this critical environmental issue,” said Jeff Beswick, President of Clean Earth. “This is a high-priority project, and we stand prepared to support and demonstrate how these processes can remediate PFAS, helping the DoD achieve its mission while being friendly to the environment. In this project, Clean Earth is the hub in the DoD’s hub and spoke strategic remediation approach." 

Clean Earth and five other companies, Aquagga, Arcadis, 374Water, Battelle, and General Atomics, will participate in the remediation of PFAS-impacted waste collected from two Department of Defense bases in Pennsylvania (Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Willow Grove and Biddle Air National Guard Base, Horsham Township) with the waste being treated at Clean Earth’s offsite locations.
