[미국] 미 물재이용협회, 덴버서 '2024 물재이용 심포지엄' 개최

전 세계서 900명 이상 참가…물재이용 위한 신기술·정책·운영 전략 공유

미국 물재이용협회(WateReuse Association)는 지난 3월 11~14일 덴버에서 '2024 물재이용 심포지엄(2024 WateReuse Symposium)'을 개최해 물재이용 및 재활용 분야 세계 최고 전문가들이 모인 가운데 물재이용을 위한 전례 없는 기회를 모색하는 자리를 마련했다.

물재이용 또는 물재활용은 물이 환경으로 돌아가기 전에 여러 번 지속 가능하게 처리하고 사용하는 것을 뜻한다. 물재이용은 산업용 냉각, 환경 복원, 관개 및 식수를 포함한 다양한 용도로 사용할 수 있다. 미국 전역과 전 세계에서 900명이 넘는 물전문가들이 덴버를 방문해 물재이용을 통한 지속 가능한 지역 사회 구축을 위한 최신 기술, 정책 접근 방식 및 운영 전략을 공유했다.

바트 와이스(Bart Weiss) 플로리다 힐스버러 카운티 유틸리티의 혁신 및 회복탄력성(Innovation and Resiliency at Hillsborough County Public Utilities) 최고 책임자이자 물재이용협회 회장은 "오늘날 미국 전역에서 점점 더 많은 지역 사회가 물재이용 프로그램을 통해 환경적으로 지속 가능해지고 있다"며 "이는 물재이용협회와 회원들의 노력, 그리고 이 심포지엄과 기타 국가, 주 및 지역 물재이용 행사에서 이뤄지는 지식 공유에 의해 가능해졌다"고 말했따.

2024년 물재이용 심포지엄에서는 콜로라도 강의 미래에 대한 물재이용의 역할에 특별한 초점을 맞췄다. 심포지엄은 내셔널 지오그래픽으로부터 올해의 모험가로 선정된 콜로라도 출신 피트 맥브라이드(Pete McBride)의 '콜로라도 강: 갈등을 통한 흐름'이라는 제목의 멀티미디어 기조 연설로 시작됐다.

애리조나주 피닉스의 트로이 헤이스(Troy Hayes), 콜로라도주 덴버의 앨런 살라자르(Alan Salazar), 서던캘리포니아 메트로폴리탄 워터 디스트릭트의 데벤 우파디에이(Deven Upadhyay) 등 세 명의 시 상수도 리더들은 콜로라도 강에 대한 활발한 전체 토론에 참여했다. 패널들은 빠르게 성장하는 도시와 농장의 수요의 균형을 맞추면서 콜로라도의 물공급 격차를 줄이기 위한 물재이용 혁신과 파트너십에 대해 논의했다.

6개 대륙에서 온 50명이 넘는 국제 참가자들이 첫 번째 물재이용에 관한 글로벌 대화 심포지엄에 참여했다. 물재이용협회와 국제 담수화 및 재이용협회(International Desalination and Reuse Association, IDRA) 간의 새로운 파트너십을 통해 전 세계 국가에서 물재이용 채택을 가속화하기 위한 논의가 이뤄졌다. 물재이용에 관한 글로벌 논의는 2024년 12월 아부다비에서 열리는 'IDRA 2024 국제 회의'에서 이어질 예정이다.

심포지엄 마지막 날 열린 2024년 기술 쇼케이스에서는 물재이용의 기회를 높이기 위한 신기술과 공정이 주목 받았다. 전국 물혁신 연합(National Alliance for Water Innovation, NAWI)과 협력해 진행된 이 쇼케이스에서는 12명의 연구원과 기술자가 무대에 올라 향후 5~15년 사이에 물재이용을 크게 개선하거나 변화시킬 수 있는 새롭고 획기적인 제안을 발표했다.

In Denver, Water Recycling Leaders Remove Barriers and Elevate Opportunities

The world’s top experts in water reuse and recycling convened this week in Denver for the 2024 WateReuse Symposium to explore the unprecedented opportunities for global water recycling.

 

Water recycling, or water reuse, is the sustainable treatment and use of water multiple times before it is returned to the environment. It can serve many beneficial purposes including industrial cooling, environmental restoration, irrigation, and drinking. Over 900 water professionals from across the United States and around the world traveled to Denver this week to learn about the latest technologies, policy approaches, and operational strategies for building sustainable communities through water recycling.

“Today, more and more communities across the U.S. are becoming more environmentally sustainable from water recycling programs,” said Bart Weiss, Chief Officer for Innovation and Resiliency at Hillsborough County Public Utilities in Florida, and WateReuse Association’s current president. “That’s made possible by the hard work of the WateReuse Association and its members, and the knowledge-sharing that takes place at this Symposium and other national, state and local WateReuse events.”

The 2024 WateReuse Symposium featured a special focus on the role of water recycling in the future of the mighty Colorado River. The week began with a multimedia keynote address titled The Colorado River: Flowing Through Conflict from native Coloradan Pete McBride, a Sony Artisan of Imagery and a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. Three municipal water leaders – Troy Hayes of Phoenix, Arizona; Alan Salazar of Denver, Colorado; and Deven Upadhyay of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California – participated in a lively plenary discussion about the river that their communities all rely on. The panelists discussed water recycling innovations and partnerships to help close the gap in the Colorado’s water supply, while balancing the needs of fast-growing cities and farms.

Over 50 international attendees from six continents joined the Symposium for the first Global Dialogue on Water Reuse. A new partnership between WateReuse Association and the International Desalination and Reuse Association (IDRA), the dialogue seeks to accelerate the adoption of water reuse in countries across the world. The Global Dialogue on Water Reuse will continue in December 2024 at the IDRA 2024 World Congress in Abu Dhabi.

On the final day of the Symposium, the 2024 Technology Showcase turned participants’ focus to the role of new technologies and processes in elevating water reuse opportunities. The showcase, in partnership with the National Alliance for Water Innovation (NAWI), brought twelve researchers and technologists to the stage to present their new and disruptive findings that could significantly improve or transform water recycling in the next five to fifteen years.
