[영국] 서던워터 애쉬포드서 수백만 파운드 규모 하·폐수처리시설 개선 프로젝트 착수

새로운 물탱크 설치해 빗물 수용능력을 1천800㎥ 증가시켜 강해진 강우현상 대비

서던워터(Southern Water)는 수백만 파운드 규모의 애쉬포드 하·폐수처리시설(Ashford Wastewater Treatment Works) 개선 프로젝트를 착수한다고 밝혔다. 

서던워터는 이 프로젝트를 통해 애쉬포드 하·폐수처리시설에 새로운 물탱크를 설치해 빗물 수용 능력을 180만 리터(1천800㎥) 증가시켜 기후 변화로 인해 더 잦아지고 강해진 강우 현상에 대비할 계획이다.

한편, 서던워터는 지난해 11월 애쉬포드 하·폐수처리시설의 악취 문제를 해결하기 위해 430만 파운드 규모의 악취 저감 프로그램을 성공적으로 완료했다. 이 프로젝트는 2025년 초까지 완료되는 것을 목표로 3월 말에 시작될 것입니다.

라이언 로렌스(Ryan Lawrence) 서던워터 프로젝트 매니저는 "서던워터는 우수토구를 줄이는 데 집중하고 있으며 인프라 개선에 투자하는 것은 이 과정의 중요한 부분이다. 이 새로운 물탱크는 서던워터가 환경 성능을 개선하고 서던워터 지역 전체에 긍정적인 변화를 주기 위해 모색하고 있는 많은 방법 중 하나"라고 말했다.

이어 "서던워터는 환경 성능을 개선하기 위해 최선을 다하고 있으며 2020년에서 2025년 사이에 30억 파운드를 네트워크에 투자하고 있다. 또한 서던워터는 올해 초 결과를 이끌어 내기 위해 2년간의 턴어라운드 계획에 착수했다"고 말했다.

Multi-million pound project to upgrade Ashford Wastewater Treatment Works begins

 

The new tank will increase our capacity for stormwater by 1.8 million litres, meaning the site will be able to handle 7.5 million litres during wet weather before it is fully treated and released back to the environment.  

This will help with the challenge of more frequent, heavier rainfall events due to climate change.  

The works will start in late March with the aim of being completed by early 2025.        

 In November 2023, a £4.3m programme of works to tackle unpleasant smells in the vicinity of Ashford Wastewater Treatment works were successfully completed. This new storm tank will not cause any new odours around the site.  

Southern Water’s Project Manager, Ryan Lawrence, said: 

“We’re focusing on reducing the number of storm overflow releases and investing in infrastructure improvements is an important part of this process. This new storm tank is one of many ways we’re seeking to improve our environmental performance and make a positive difference across our region.” 

"Southern Water is committed to improving its environmental performance and is investing £3bn between 2020 and 2025 in its network - the equivalent of £1,500 per household. The company also launched a two-year turnaround plan earlier this year to drive results.
