[영국] 스코틀랜드워터, 영국 최초 하수구 청소용 초고압 로봇 절단기 개발

직경 10cm∼1m까지 하수구에 쌓인 퇴적물 제거…하수구 문제 해결하기 위해 첨단기술 사용

스코틀랜드 워터(Scottish Water)는 영국 최초로 초고압 로봇공학에 눈을 돌려 사우스래너크셔주(South Lanarkshire)의 전략적 하수구를 막고 있는 수십 년에 걸친 퇴적물을 제거하고 있다.

거의 1km에 달하는 러더글렌(Rutherglen)의 이스트필드(Eastfield) 하수구는 콘크리트 같은 석회석과 예전의 산업 지역에서 흘러나온 것으로 의심되는 위험물질로 막혀 있었다.

분사 및 다이아몬드 끝 밀링 헤드(milling head)와 같은 기존 방법을 사용하여 이를 안전하게 제거하려는 모든 노력은 성공하지 못한 것으로 판명됐다.

그러나 스코틀랜드 수도 프로젝트 관리자(Scottish Water Project Manager)인 마크 맥키니(Marc McKinnie)는 공급 파트너인 조지 레슬리사(George Leslie Ltd)를 포함하여 공공 하수도시설 공급망의 사람들과 이야기를 나누기 시작했다.

마크 맥키니(Marc McKinnie)는 “우리는 주변에 물어보기 시작했고, 공급업체 중 한 곳이 뛰어난 정밀도로 평방인치(in²)당 4만 파운드(pound, 1파운드 : 약 454g)로 작동할 수 있는 독일 시장에 출시된 새로운 로봇 절단기에 대해 뛰어난 정밀도로 작동할 수 있다고 알려주었다”라면서 “이것은 영국에서 사용된 최초의 제품이자 전 세계적으로 단 3개 제품 중 하나로, 모든 변화를 가져왔다”고 말했다.

그는 “단 3개월만에 우리는 기존의 방법을 사용하여 몇 년 동안 달성하기 위해 고군분투해 온 하수구 전체를 청소할 수 있었다”라고 강조했다.

이 로봇은 좁은 초고압 물 분출로 단단한 퇴적물에 분사하여 효과적으로 작은 조각으로 ‘절단(cutting)’하는 방식으로 작동한다. 이 기술은 환경에 안전하며 역사적인 산업 현장에서 잠재적으로 위험한 물질을 씻어내고 안전하게 폐기할 수 있도록 보장한다.

스코틀랜드의 엔바이로 클린사(Enviro-Clean Ltd)의 운영 관리자인 로버트 에만스(Robert Emans)는 “문제에 대한 혁신적인 접근 방식을 찾고 초고압 로봇 절단기의 기능을 성공적으로 시연하는 데 스코틀랜드 워터(Scottish Water)를 지원할 수 있게 되어 기쁘게 생각한다”라고 말했다.

에만스는 이어 “우리 팀이 정확한 절단을 보장할 수 있도록 지속적인 CCTV 모니터링과 함께 10cm에서 1m 너비의 하수구에서 완고한 차단을 해결하는 데 더 큰 다양성을 제공하는 것은 정말 우리에게 게임 체인저(game changer)이다”라고 덧붙였다.

High-Tech UK-First to Solve Historic Sewer Problem

 

The ultra high pressure robotic cutter has been developed to clear sewers from 10cm to a metre in diameter.

Scottish Water has turned to ultra high-pressure robotics in a UK-first to remove decades of industrial deposits blocking a strategic sewer in South Lanarkshire.

Nearly a kilometre of Rutherglen’s Eastfield trunk sewer had become clogged with concrete-like calcite and suspected hazardous materials running under former industrial land. 

All efforts to safely remove them using conventional methods such as jetting, and diamond-tipped milling heads had proved unsuccessful.

But then Scottish Water Project Manager Marc McKinnie started speaking to people in the publicly owned utility’s supply chain, including delivery partner George Leslie Ltd. 

He said: “As a project team we rapidly understood that typical methods would not work here and that we needed to be inventive.

“We started to ask around and one of our suppliers told us about a new robotic cutter on the market in Germany capable of operating at 40,000 pounds-per-square-inch with outstanding precision.

“This is the first of its kind to be used in the UK and one of only three worldwide, and it has made all the difference.

“In just three months we have been able to clean the entire kilometre of sewer - something we had been struggling to achieve for several year using conventional methods.”

The robot works by directing narrow, ultra high-pressure jets of water onto the hard deposits, effectively ‘cutting’ them into smaller pieces. The technique is safe for the environment and ensures potentially hazardous materials from historic industrial sites can be flushed out and safely disposed of.

Robert Emans, Operations Manager at Enviro-Clean (Scotland) Ltd said: “We are excited to have been able to support Scottish Water in finding an innovative approach to the problem and successfully demonstrating the capability of the Ultra High-Pressure Robotic Cutter.

“It really is a game changer for us, allowing greater versatility in tackling stubborn blockages in sewers from 10cm to a metre wide, coupled with constant CCTV monitoring allowing our team to ensure precision cutting.

“It also significantly reduces time on-site, cuts costs and lowers our carbon footprint providing a greener solution.
