ADM은 4월 30일(현지시각) 글로벌 재생농업 프로그램(Global Regenerative Agriculture Program)을 2023년 280만 에이커 이상으로 확대해 목표인 200만 에이커를 초과 달성했다고 발표했다. 2024년 350만 에이커 달성을 목표로 하고 있으며, 2025년 목표를 400만 에이커에서 500만 에이커로 늘릴 계획이다.

그렉 모리스(Greg Morris) ADM 농업서비스·오일씨드사업 사장은 "운영하는 가치사슬의 지속 가능성을 높이고 탄소 발자국을 줄이기 위한 노력을 확대하고 있다"며 "우리는 농부가 땅의 관리자라는 것을 알고 있는 만큼 이들의 다양한 요구를 충족시키고 각자의 상황에 가장 적합한 방식으로 권한을 부여하는 다양한 프로그램을 제공하고 있다"고 밝혔다.

모리스 사장은 이어 "CPG 리더들이 소비자 수요를 충족하기 위해 재생 농업을 확대하는 것이 시급하다는 것을 알고 있다"며 "가치사슬을 아우르는 이러한 협력적인 접근 방식은 2023년 280만 에이커 이상 재생농업 실현을 통해 그 가치를 입증했다"고 강조했다.

ADM은 유럽과 중남미에서 새로운 프로그램을 시작하는 등 전 세계적으로 재생농업 노력을 확장했으며, 2023년 옥수수, 대두, 밀, 땅콩, 목화, 수수, 카놀라, 보리 등의 재배자 2만8천여 명과 파트너십을 맺었다. 이를 통해 토양 건강을 개선하고 탄소 발자국을 감소시켰다.

 ADM은 지난해 11월 우선순위, 목표, 프로그램 및 성과를 상세히 기술한 최초의 『2023 재생 농업 보고서(2023 Regenerative Agriculture Report)』를 발행했으며, 올해 말 업데이트된 세부 보고서를 발행할 예정이다.

 

ADM은 토양 건강과 생물 다양성, 기후 및 수자원을 보호하고 개선하는 동시에 농업 비즈니스 개발을 지원하는 '결과 기반 농업 접근방식(Outcome-based Farming Approach)'으로 재생농업을 정의하고 있다.

재생농업은 지역의 물리적 조건과 문화에 적응하며, △토양 교란 최소화(Minimizing Soil Disturbance) △토양 내 살아 있는 뿌리 유지(Maintaining Living Roots in Soil) △지속적인 맨땅 덮기(Continuously Covering Bare Soil) △작물과 토양 미생물, 수분 매개체에 중점을 둔 다양성 극대화(Maximizing Diversity With an Emphasis on Coprs, Soil Microbes and Pollinators) △영양분 및 살충제 등 투입물 관리(Responsibly Managing Inputs, Including Nutrients and Pesticides) 토지 관리의 5가지 원칙을 기반으로 한다.

ADM은 재생농업을 구현하고 확장하기 위해 펩시코(PepsiCo), 네슬레(Nestlé), 칼스버그(Carlsberg)와 같은 다운스트림 고객과 협력해 파트너십을 맺었으며, 이를 통해 전체 가치사슬에 대한 가치를 창출할 수 있는 역량을 입증하고 있다. 

또한, 파머스 비즈니스 네트워크(Farmers Business Network)와 같은 기술 파트너, 프랙티칼 파머스 오브 아이오와(Practical Farmers of Iowa), 덕스 언리미티드(Ducks Unlimited), 아메리칸 팜랜드 트러스트(American Farmland Trust) 등 보존단체와 협력하고 있으며, 필드 투 마켓(Field to MArket), 쿨 팜 얼리언스(Cool Farm Alliance), 지속가능농업 이니셔티브(Sustainable Agriculture Initiative) 등 산업 이니셔티브 및 연합에 참여하고 있다. 

아울러, 국립어류야생동물재단(National Fish and Wildlike Foundation)과 USDA의 기후 스마트 상품을 위한 파트너십(Partnership for Climate Smart Commodities) 참여 등을 통해 농부에게 더 많은 가치를 제공하기 위한 자금조달 기회를 활용한다. ADM의 재생농업 프로그램은 농부에게 직접적인 재정 지원을 제공하며, 낮은 진입장벽을 보장하는 쉬운 프로세스와 최첨단 기술, 전문가의 광범위한 지원과 지침을 제공한다.

ADM Exceeds 2 Million Regenerative Agriculture Acre Goal for 2023, Increases 2025 Goal to 5 Million Acres

Launch of regenerative agriculture initiatives in Europe, Latin America accelerate global progress as company works toward 3.5 million acres in 2024

 

CHICAGO--ADM (NYSE: ADM) announced today that its global regenerative agriculture program expanded to more than 2.8 million acres in 2023, exceeding its 2 million acre goal. In addition, the company announced that it is targeting 3.5 million regenerative acres in 2024 and is increasing its 2025 goal from 4 million to 5 million acres globally.

“ADM is scaling up efforts to enhance the sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint of the value chains in which we operate, and our leadership in regenerative agriculture is a key driver of that bold agenda,” said Greg Morris, president of ADM’s Ag Services and Oilseeds business. “We know that farmers are stewards of the land, and we offer an array of programs that meet their varied needs and empower each of them in the ways that work best for their individual situations. At the same time, we know that retail and CPG leaders understand the urgency of expanding regenerative agriculture to meet consumer demand, and we’re bringing those downstream customers together with farmers to ensure we’re meeting their needs. This collaborative approach, spanning the value chain, has demonstrated its value through our more than 2.8 million regenerative agriculture acres in 2023, and we’re excited to continue to expand our program and lead in this important global effort.”

ADM partnered with more than 28,000 growers of corn, soybeans, wheat, peanuts, cotton, sorghum, canola and barley in 2023 as it expanded its regenerative agriculture efforts globally, including the launch of new programs in Europe and Latin America. Participating farms again saw improvements in soil health and carbon footprint.

Last November, ADM issued its first-ever regenerative agriculture report, detailing priorities, goals, programs and achievements to date. The company expects to issue an updated detailed report later this year.

ADM defines regenerative agriculture as an outcome-based farming approach that protects and improves soil health, biodiversity, climate and water resources while supporting farming business development. Regenerative agriculture is adaptive to local physical conditions and culture, and is based on five principles of land management:

- Minimizing soil disturbance

- Maintaining living roots in soil

- Continuously covering bare soil

- Maximizing diversity with an emphasis on crops, soil microbes and pollinators

- Responsibly managing inputs, including nutrients and pesticides.
