Alaska governor proposing changes to regulations on wastewater from cruise ships
JUNEAU, Alaska — Alaskan Governor Sean Parnell is looking to change the water the state regulates wastewater from cruise ships in his newest proposal, according to The Washington Post.
His proposal has drawn criticism that the changes would roll back provisions of a 2006 citizen initiative to require cruise ships to meet state water quality standards when dumping wastewater, stated the article.
Larry Hartig, commissioner of the state Department of Environmental Conservation, said the governor¡¯s proposal would align the rules for cruise ships along with others who get discharge permits from the agency.
The proposal would require cruise ships to discharge wastewater in a manner consistent with applicable state or federal law, noted the article. The wastewater would need to meet state water quality standards at the point of discharge.
