Researchers identified hearing loss seen at metal concentrations common in the general population and below workplace standards, with hearing ability dropping about 14-19%.

The study was published in Environmental Health Perspectives and looked at 3,698 US adults aged 20 to 69 years old who had responded to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1999 and 2004.

The researchers found the link after looking for other factors associated with hearing loss such as age, sex, education and health problems.

Many factors can contribute to hearing loss and it is important to be aware of the risks and where to go to for help. It is essential to be aware of any changes in your hearing and to book an audiogram to measure your hearing ability if you feel you have problems. Understanding what causes may be behind the hearing loss is also very important."
