Lux Research사는 세계적으로 물연구 대학 연구소에 대한 순위를 발표했다. 연구소 순위는 담수화, 물의 재이용 및 멤브레인 분야 중심으로 특화하여 결정했으며 그중에 싱가포르의 2개 연구소가 1위, 2위를 차지하고 있다. 글로벌 10위까지의 연구소 순위 및 그들 연구소의 핵심 연구 분야는 다음과 같다.
1. 싱가포르의 National University : 멤브레인, 담수화 및 재이용 분야

한편 Lux Research 사는 전세계의 전문가들과 인터뷰를 시도하여 향후 연구분야 추진을 위해 파트너십을 주도할 수 있는 대학 연구소에 대한 검토했다.
1) 싱가포르 연구소가 가장 각광을 받고 있다. 물의 재이용, 담수화 및 멤브레인 분야를 중점으로 하며 정부차원의 강력한 지원으로 세계적 선도그룹이다.
2) 네덜란드 국가는 유럽의 물수요를 주로 해결하고 있다. 네덜란드의 Delft 및 Wageningen 대학 등이 활발한 연구를 진행하고 있으나 유럽연합은 Wetsus 등의 국가연구센터와 일을 하려고 한다.
3) 캘리포니아 대학이 미국지역의 연구를 주도하고 있다. 아직 기술이 미진한 미국서부 지역에서 많은 연구대학들이 부상하고 있으며 규모가 작은 대학들의 연구소들도 새로운 혁신적인 물처리 기술을 개발하고 있으나 캘리포니아 대학이 대부분의 핵심기술 연구를 추진하고 있다.

The top global water research institutes
Two Singapore universities top the world in
water research while a set of geographically widespread players specialize in key subsets of the water space as water efficiency attains global priority. The National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University took the top two spots, respectively, in a ranking of the top global water research institutes by Lux Research. Both focus mostly on
desalination, reuse and
membranes, the latter two topping global agendas as well.
The Top 10 water research institutes in Lux's rankings, along with their areas of specialization, are:

"As water efficiency becomes a priority for countries around the world, well-funded universities and institutes are proliferating, doing research that could transform the water industry," said Brent Giles, Lux Research Senior Analyst and the lead author of the report titled, "Top Academics and Institutions in Water Research 2013." "Still, for a corporation or investor, finding the best university or institute partnerships is often hit or miss."
Lux Research surveyed water research institutes, and profiled and interviewed key thought leaders across the world, to identify best practices for partnering with academic research over the next 15 years. Among their findings:

Singapore's research is highly focused. Singapore has a specific focus on water reuse and desalination, besides membrane research. Strong government funding for three leading institutes make Singapore a world leader.

Dutch research addresses European needs. Plugged into European priorities, Dutch universities such as Delft and Wageningen are strong institutes. But European corporations more often work with national research centers like Wetsus.

University of California tops U.S. research. The arid western U.S. gives rise to several top universities. Many smaller schools have carved out a niche for themselves in advanced water research, but the University of California system holds some of the most innovative.
