HD Supply shares rise 5% after disappointing IPO
Published 27th June 2013
Shares in HD Supply rose by 5% in early trading this morning, despite the company raising considerably less than expected from yesterday¡¯s initial public offering.
HD Supply, which has an estimated 20% share of the North American water products distribution market, priced 53.2 million shares at $18, valuing the company¡¯s equity at $3.3 billion.
The offer price was well below the initially indicated price range of $22-25, and although the proceeds will be used to reduce HD Supply¡¯s pile of high-yield debt saving the company $17 million in annual debt service costs renewed fears over higher interest rates in the US may have impacted sentiment around the name, which still has a significant liability portfolio.
It also raises the question of whether majority shareholders Bain Capital, Carlyle Group and Clayton, Dubilier & Rice were right to gamble on a public listing for HD Supply, rather than pursuing a strategic sale.
