Arizona Consumers' Rights Secured for More Energy Efficient Swimming Pools

Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) June 24, 2013

The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) has successfully fought for upholding energy efficient standards in Arizona that make for easier and more affordable maintenance of swimming pools.

The Arizona pool pump energy standards law, known as Title 44, went into effect on Jan. 1, 2012. However House Bill 2334 by Rep. Montenegro was introduced this year to repeal the energy saving standards, marking the second time legislation was introduced to repeal the law. HB 2334 did not have enough support to be voted on by the full house and died when the legislature adjourned on June 14, 2013. The law requires pool owners be given a choice when selecting a replacement pump of either a single-speed pump or a multi-speed pump that offers increased energy efficiency.

¡°APSP Arizona members made calls, sent emails and testified in committee in support of energy efficiency measures for pools and spas, as provided in our American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/APSP energy efficiency standards,¡± said Jennifer Hatfield, APSP Director of Government Relations. ¡°Once again we¡¯ve leveraged our grassroots in Arizona and they¡¯ve answered the call to protect consumers and ensure positive experiences with our industry¡¯s products.¡±

The ANSI/APSP/International Code Council (ICC)-14 2011 Standard for the Energy Efficiency of Self Contained Portable Electric Spas and Hot Tubs and the ANSI/APSP/ICC-15 2011 Standard for Residential Swimming Pool and Spa Energy Efficiency represents the technology guidelines for the manufacture of pool, spa and hot tub products that consume less energy while maintaining water quality. These provide consumers with more choices to save money while enjoying their pool, spa or hot tub. Title 44 provides for specific requirements that follow and are consistent with the ANSI/APSP/ICC 14 and 15 standards.

¡°Owners of pools in Arizona and across the country should access the APSP Energy Efficient Pool Pump Database at http://www.APSP.org/GoGreen. Here they can find all energy compliant products built to ANSI/APSP/ICC standards that will enable them to reduce their operating costs and make it easier to maintain their pools,¡± Hatfield explained.
