Hunter becomes the target as new O&M contract looms
New South Wales water utility Hunter Water is looking to strengthen its relationship with the private sector by contracting out the operation of all its water and wastewater treatment plants under a new 8-year scheme.
The utility is seeking expressions of interest by 18 September, and expects to initiate the contract next June. Hunter Water is coming to the end of a 5-year alliance contract with Abigroup and CH2M Hill, which has seen major upgrades of a number of wastewater treatment plants, as well as the ongoing construction of a 9,000m3/d water reuse plant as part of the Kooragang Industrial Water Scheme.
The decision to hand over the operation of six water treatment plants (with a total capacity of 476,000m3/d) and 19 WWTPs to the private sector is the first major deal of its kind since Perth awarded an O&M contract for its water and wastewater treatment assets in 2012.
