Ireland and UK sign a historic wind energy sharing deal

The Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA) has enthusiastically greeted a significant agreement signed by Ireland and the UK government that is expected to encourage and help make the most of Ireland's wind energy resources.

In response to the declaration announced after yesterday's British Irish Council's meeting about the utilization of major wind and marine resources in and around Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, chief executive of Irish Wind Energy Association, Mr. Dr Michael Walsh said it will be considered as a milestone moment for Ireland regarding maximizing the potential of wind sector in future.

Talking about the deal, he further quoted that it was too early to say anything about the details and prospective results of the contract but it is definitely a concrete step in the right direction and it will offer total new employment of 28,000 jobs in 1.6bn pounds annual export industry for Ireland.

According to Dr. Walsh, this historical deal recognizes the enormous potential from wind energy on the island of Ireland more than any previous deals or contracts as it is a trading partner and not just us who realized that our wind resource is unique and immensely underutilized. Walsh also conveyed further his thoughts on the deal saying that IWEA always believed in Ireland's potential in delivering and exporting wind energy. This deal will realize his beliefs much earlier than expected.

Mr. Walsh particularly mentioned Charles Hendry, UK Minister of State for Energy whose contribution to the deal was immense. Walsh further expressed his views by saying that this all-island agreement will facilitate the striking augmentation in wind-energy development and will maximize our underutilized resource.

Foreseeing having more to export than to import, Walsh opinions also reflected his views that the deal will facilitate the incorporation of Irish and UK markets. This agreement will facilitate mutual exchange process based on our unique wind resources.

All European countries are expected and bound legally with EU to share a fixed amount of energy from the renewable sources. Ireland will meet our goal of 16pc renewable energy very economically and go beyond that for sure, Mr. Walsh added.

He also said that having a regulatory framework to enable the process is more critical as it might result in loosing a huge opportunity if this is not put in place.
