Rosatom: Construction of Akkuyu nuclear plant to start in May

Construction on the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Mersin will begin in April or May -- as soon as Russian state-run nuclear company Rosatom receives an environmental impact report from the Turkish government, according to Rosatom Operations Manager Oleg Titov.

Speaking at a meeting on the Akkuyu nuclear plant organized in Moscow by the Russian-Turkish Businessmen Association (RTİB) and Rosatom, Titov said that 10,000-12,000 people will be employed in the construction project. ¡°We can transfer 49 percent of the project's shares to the Turkish private sector. [Turkish companies] who desire to join the project can negotiate with us,¡± Titov said on Sunday.

The only company set to participate in the project so far is Atomstroyexport, Titov said. He went on to invite Turkish firms to join the project, adding that tenders will be held for the construction of the plant.
Titov said Rosatom had filed for the environmental impact report from the Turkish authorities and claimed that the company had already acted on warnings to clear up problems. ¡°We are looking forward to the report,¡± said Titov.

In late January, environmental organization Greenpeace claimed that construction had begun on the nuclear power plant without proper authorization.

According to the organization, Rosatom, claiming it was building a quarry, began construction on the plant without having obtained an environmental impact report or permission.

On Feb. 5 a group of 50 people, including Akkuyu residents and members of the Chamber of Electrical Engineers (EMO), the Mersin Chamber of Doctors and the Mersin Anti-Nuclear Platform, gathered in front of an administrative court in Mersin to protest a Dec. 6, 2013 decision by the Turkish Atomic Energy Agency (TAEK) to approve the construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant.

Titov dismissed claims that the construction of the plant would cause environmental pollution and said precise information on the issue would be available in the expert reports.

Turkey does not currently have any nuclear power plants, but has plans for three, including the controversial Mersin facility. The other two plants are planned for the Black Sea province of Sinop and the northwestern province of K©¥rklareli. Several protests have been staged in opposition to the plans.

Fifteen Turkish student studying in Russia who will work on the Akkuyu project as engineers also attended the meeting. Naki Karaaslan, president of RTİB, said that Turkish students studying nuclear engineering in Russia will contribute to Turkish-Russian nuclear energy cooperation.
