MBBR technology centre of petrochemical water reuse project in Taiwan
Taiwanese refiner and olefins producer Formosa Petrochemical Corporation (FPCC) has awarded a 15 million euro contract to the oil and gas solutions & technologies unit of Veolia.
FPCC is upgrading the water treatment plant as part of an expansion to the production capacity of its Mai Liao petrochemical complex (south west coast of Taiwan). One of the aims is to reduce surface water consumption.
As part of the agreement Veolia will design the water treatment plant upgrade and supply the technology and equipment.
Solutions used at FPCC Mai Lioa site include in-house technologies such as AnoxKaldnes MBBR (Moving Bed Bioreactor), with the aim to maximize water reuse.
This solution and the technologies implemented by Veolia on this site will provide for an important decrease in raw water consumption of the plant (from 60,000 m3/day down to 25,000 m3/day, of which 5,000 m3/day of water reused).
The Mai Liao complex is the largest in Taiwan with a refining capacity of 540,000 barrels per day and a yearly production of ethylene and propylene exceeding respectively 2.9 and 2.3 million tons.
