| [유럽] 더 나은 대기오염 정보 제공으로 공중보건 개선
EU가 투자하는 PASODOBLE 프로젝트는 유럽 전역을 대상으로 하는 ‘Myair’라는 대기오염 정보 시스템을 개발하였다. 본 시스템은 공기질에 관한 데이터를 환경관련 기관, 의료기관뿐만 아니라 일반 대중에게도 제공해주는 시스템이다.
산업시설 및 운송수단에서 발생하는 대기 오염물질은 대중의 건강에 부정적인 영향을 미친다. 이러한 대기 오염물질에 관한 정보를 수집하고, 더 많은 사람들에게 정보를 제공하기 위해 EU는 PASODOBLE이라는 프로젝트를 수행하였고, 이를 통해 ‘Myair’라는 대기오염 정보 시스템을 개발하였다.
이 프로젝트는 대기오염문제가 심각한 유럽의 많은 도시들의 보건 환경을 개선하고 삶의 질을 향상시킬 것으로 기대된다. PASODOBLE의 “Myair” 시스템은 대기오염 관련 정보를 헬스케어 전문가와 호흡기 질환을 연구하는 연구자 및 과학자, 대기오염을 모니터링하는 환경관련 기관, 대기질 예보를 하는 지방정부의 공무원, 관광 및 스포츠와 관련된 조직 등에 전달된다. PASODOBLE의 책임자이자 German Aerospace Center (DLR)의 물리학자인 Julian Meyer-Arnek은 프로젝트는 전체적으로 성공적이었으며, 특히 환경 규제, EU 기준, 의료 분야에 많은 도움을 주었다고 밝혔다. 그는 유럽에는 오염과 불충분한 대기이동으로 인해 대기오염이 매우 심각한 ‘핫 스팟’ 지역이 있으며 여기에는 런던과 이탈리아의 Po Valley (베니스 포함)를 비롯하여 독일, 프랑스, 벨기에 및 네덜란드의 일부 지역을 포함한다고 밝혔다. 특히 이탈리아의 Po Valley는 산업시설과 운송수단에서 배출한 이산화질소 등을 포함한 대기가 알프스 산맥에 가로막혀 서쪽으로 이동하지 못하기 때문에 대기 문제가 심각하다고 밝혔다.
PASODOBLE 프로젝트 팀은 헬싱키, 아테네, 로테르담, 소피아, 브뤠셀 및 테살로니키 지역 등의 큰 도시에서 공기 질 예보 개선을 위해 노력하였다. 예를 들어 런던에서는 프로젝트의 연구진이 “airTEXT”라는 서비스를 지원하였다. 이 서비스는 거리별로 대기질 정보를 확인할 수 있는 프로그램으로 2012년 런던 하계 올림픽 당시 런던 시장으로부터 공식적으로 추천받았다. 또한 남부 프랑스 니스에 있는 PASODOLE 프로젝트의 파트너 병원의 의사는 대기질 정보를 환자들의 호흡기 질환 개선에 사용하고 있다. Meyer-Arnek은 “’Myair’ 시스템의 정보는 사용자 친화적이며, 커스터마이즈할 수 있기 때문에 대중들이 모든 정보에 접근할 수 있고, 특정 도시와 지역에 맞는 정보를 활용할 수 있는 장점이 있다”고 말했다.

Improving public health in Europe through better air quality information
PASODOBLE project has developed a European-wide system, called 'Myair', to deliver essential air quality data to environmental officials, doctors and hospitals, as well as to the public at large.
Air pollution from industrial facilities, transport systems and other sources can have a negative impact on public health. Using information from satellite- and ground-based sensors, as well as computer modeling, the European Union (EU)-funded PASODOBLE project has developed a European-wide system, called "Myair", to deliver essential air quality data to environmental officials, doctors and hospitals, as well as to the public at large.
The project is expected to support the improvement of public health and living conditions in Europe's cities and regions where health can be most affected by air quality.
PASODOBLE’s "Myair" system delivers air quality information geared towards a wide range of researchers and scientists, including health-care professionals who treat people with respiratory illnesses, environmental agencies that monitor air pollution conditions, local government officials that issue air quality forecasts, as well as tourism and sports organisations.
"Overall the project has been a success," says Julian Meyer-Arnek, PASODOBLE's deputy project coordinator and a physicist at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). “We are helping environmental regulators find air pollution outbreaks, countries meet EU standards, and doctors and hospitals better anticipate patients’ needs.”
Europe has numerous "hotspots," Meyer-Arnek says, where air quality conditions are prone to reaching potential harmful levels due to pollution and insufficient air movement. Among these areas are London, Italy’s Po Valley (including Venice), parts of Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. "In particular, Italy's Po Valley is frequently affected because when the Alps block westerly winds, emissions such as nitrous dioxide from industrial plants and cars can become trapped," explains Meyer-Arnek.
PASODOBLE project team is working to improve air quality forecasts in many large cities including Helsinki, Athens, Rotterdam, Sofia, Brussels and Thessaloniki. For example, in London the project researchers are supporting "airTEXT" service, which provides street-by-street air quality information. The service was officially recommended for the 2012 Summer Olympics by London's mayor. Moreover, doctors in southern France are working with a hospital in Nice and one of the PASODOBLE project's partners to help patients with respiratory problems.
"The data provided by the "Myair" system is customisable and delivered in a user-friendly way," says Meyer-Arnek. "Everything is accessible by the public and the information can be adapted to the specific needs of a certain city or region," he concludes.
