| [미국] 신규발전용량의 40% 이상을 공급하는 재생가능 에너지
미 연방에너지규제위원회(Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, FERC)가 발표한 최근 에너지 인프라 업데이트 (Energy Infrastructure Update) 보고서에 따르면 태양발전, 풍력발전, 바이오매스, 지열 및 수력발전 등을 포함한 재생가능 에너지 (Renewable Energy)는 2014년 9월까지 미국 내 서비스를 시작한 신규 전력생산용량의 40.61%를 차지하는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 오직 천연가스만이 2014년 3분기까지 더 많은 신규 용량을 추가한 것으로 나타났다.
재생가능 에너지 자원을 모두 합한 2014년 신규발전용량은 석탄, 석유 및 원자력 발전이 생산한 에너지와 비교했을 때 약 35배 높은 것으로 계산되었다. 즉 석탄, 석유 및 원자력발전이 약 104MW만의 생산량을 추가한데 반해 재생가능 에너지는 약 3,598 MW의 신규용량을 더한 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 지난 9월의 신규발전용량 중 2/3는 재생가능 에너지 자원에서 확보된 것으로 나타났다. 신규발전용량 603 MW중 태양발전은 6.8%인 41MW를 차지하였으며, 풍력발전은 60.86%인 367MW를 추가한 것으로 나타났다.
지난 2014년 1월 이후 모든 종류의 발전원으로부터 도입된 신규발전용량은 8,860MW에 달하는 것으로 조사되었다. 이 중 태양발전과 관련된 187개의 유니트는 1,671MW를 추가하여 18.86%를 차지하였다. 그리고 풍력발전은 28개의 유니트를 통해 1,614MW를 제공하여 18.22%를 차지하였다. 수력발전은 7개의 유니트를 통해 141MW, 바이오매스는 38개의 유니트를 통해 1.58%인 140MW를 제공하였다. 그리고 마지막으로 5개의 지열발전 유니트를 통하여 신규발전용량 중 32 MW를 차지한 것으로 나타났다.
신규발전용량과 관련한 나머자 부분은 41개의 천연가스 유니트가 5,153 MW (58.16%)의 신규용량을 제공하였고, 1개의 원자력 유니트는 71 MW (0.80 %), 11개의 석유 관련 유니트는 33 MW (0.37%), 6개의 다른 설비는 약 7 MW (0.08%)의 신규용량을 제공한 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 많은 석탄발전소가 가동 중지에 들어가면서 2014년 신규로 추가된 석탄발전소는 없는 것으로 나타났다.
2013년 3분기까지의 신규발전용량을 비교했을 때 2014년 같은 기간에 재생가능 자원으로부터 도입된 생산규모는 11.8% 증가한 것으로 나타났다. 즉 2013년에는 3,218 MW 규모였으나 2014년에는 3,598 MW로 확대되었다. 결과적으로 재생가능 에너지는 미국 내 가동 중인 발전설비용량의 16.35%를 차지하여 2013년 대비 15.68% 증가한 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 재생가능 에너지 발전능력은 석유(3.97%)와 원자력 발전(9.23%)의 발전능력을 합한 것보다 더 큰 것으로 나타났다.
이러한 추세와 관련하여 SUN DAY Campaign의 Ken Bossong은 "지속적이면서 빠르게 성장하고 있는 재생가능 자원은 앞으로도 가격하락이 계속될 것으로 보이며, 관련 기술도 개선될 것으로 예상된다. 이제 석탄, 석유 및 원자력의 시대는 막을 내리고 있다. 재생가능 에너지 시대가 우리 앞에 펼쳐질 것"이라고 말했다.

Renewable Energy Provides More Than 40% of New Generating Capacity
According to data from the latest Energy Infrastructure Update report just released from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Office of Energy Projects, renewable energy sources including solar, wind, biomass, geothermal and hydro account for 40.61 percent of all new electrical energy capacity put into service in the U.S. through the first nine months of 2014. Only natural gas provided more new capacity during the first three quarters of the year.
New generation capacity from these combined sources of renewable energy in 2014 is nearly 35 times that of coal, oil and nuclear combined – 3,598 megawatts (MW) from renewables and only 104 MW from coal, oil and nuclear.
In September, two-thirds of new generating capacity came from renewable energy sources. Of the 603 MW of new capacity last month, solar contributed 41 MW (6.8 percent) and wind 367 MW (60.86 percent).
Since January of 2014 8,860 MW of new generating capacity has been installed from all sources. Of that, 187 units of solar account for 1,671 MW (18.86 percent), 28 units of wind provide 1,614 MW (18.22 percent), 7 units, or 141 MW, of hydropower (1.59 percent), 38 units of biomass for 140 MW (1.58 percent) and 5 units of geothermal producing 32 MW of new capacity (0.36 percent).
The balance of new generating capacity came from 41 units of natural gas for 5,153 MW (58.16 percent), 1 unit of nuclear at 71 MW (0.80 percent), 11 units of oil providing 33 MW (0.37 percent) and 6 units of “other” to round out new capacity with 7 MW (0.08 percent).
When comparing the first three quarters of 2013 to the same period this year, new generating capacity from renewable sources grew 11.8 percent: 3,218 MW in 2013 vs. 3,598 MW in 2014.
In total, renewable energy accounts for 16.35 percent of the installed operating generating capacity in the United States, up from 15.68 percent a year earlier. Renewable energy capacity is now larger than oil (3.97 percent) and nuclear (9.23 percent) combined.
“The steady and rapid growth of renewable energy is unlikely to abate as prices continue to drop and the technologies continue to improve,” noted Ken Bossong, Executive Director of the SUN DAY Campaign. “The era of coal, oil, and nuclear is drawing to a close; the age of renewable energy is now upon us.”
