Beijing to get megatonne desalination plant by 2019

Beijing neighbouring province, Hebei, has unveiled plans for a seawater desalination project scheduled for completion by 2019.

The project, once operational, will have the potential to desalinate one million tonnes of seawater daily, according to Beijing Enterprises Water Group's seawater desalination department director Wang Xiaoshui.
The plant would provide one tenth of the metropolis' current annual water consumption.

The project is divided into two parts: seawater desalination and processed water delivery to Beijing. The project will be located along the Bohai Sea at the Caofeidian District of Tangshan City. A chemical plant will process the project's by products to produce salt and other chemicals, Wang said.

The preliminary draft on the feasibility report has been finished and research work on the second part, which will include water pipeline distribution, is underway, according to Wang.

The company said the name is a tribute to alchemy: "Although medieval alchemists failed to convert lead into gold, we've successfully helped the membrane industry convert contaminated and saline water into blue gold since 1993," said company chief executive officer and technical director Mo Malk.

AWC has for its 20 years provided reverse osmosis chemicals that "lower operating costs, increase recovery, eliminate hazardous acid dosing and reduce the frequency of membrane cleanings," according to the company.

The company will continue to operate in its current structure, and all contacts and email addresses will remain unchanged.
