Qatar wastewater contract worth ¢æ300m sees FCC enter country and fend off Spanish competition

The Qatar Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has awarded a ¢æ300 million contract to Spanish firm FCC Aqualia to manage the sewerage system in Al Dhakhira (Qatar) for the next 10 years.

Representing the company¡¯s first entry in Qatar, FCC Aqualia won the tender against several companies, including Cadagua, Acciona and Ferrovial and multinationals such as Daewoo, Samsung and Marubeni.

The winning bid will see a consortium composed of FCC Aqualia (through its subsidiary, Aqualia MACE) and the South Korean company, Hyundai, design, construct, operate and maintain the wastewater treatment facilities.

This will include wastewater pumping stations, transfer pumping station and collectors associated with the city of Al Dhakhira, located some 60 kilometres from Doha, the capital.

Handling an average flow of 56,200 m3/day, the new treatment plant will service a population of more than 200,000 residents.

More than 35 kilometres of pipes will be used in project construction, with peak flows (with maximum wastewater treatment) of 168,000 m3 and a wastewater tank with capacity for 84,000 m3.

This new contract is the third for FCC Aqualia in this region, after the sewerage management contract in Abu Dhabi for the city of Al-Ain and the contract in Riyadh (the Saudi capital) for enhancing the efficiency of the supply network.
