기존의 전통적인 온수장치는 물을 원하는 온도까지 올리는데 많은 시간이 필요하였다. 이는 물과 에너지를 낭비하고 있다는 것을 의미하기도 한다. 유럽연합(European Union)이 지원하는 RAPIDHEAT 프로젝트를 통해 개발된 새로운 순간온수솔루션(Instant Hot Water Solution)은 난방 및 제어 기술을 최적화하여 장치의 스위치를 켜자마다 2초 이내에 원하는 온도의 물을 제공할 수 있는 경량의 저열량히터로서 에너지와 비용 절감에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.
RAPIDHEAT 프로젝트의 코디네이터이자 영국을 기반으로 하는 Cressall Resistors사의 Peter Duncan은 "영국인들은 일반적으로 하루에 약 1억65백만 잔의 차와 7천만 잔의 커피를 마신다. 이는 많은 양의 온수를 사용한다는 의미이기도 한다. 많은 사람들이 자판기를 이용하고 있으며, 사용자들은 신선하게 끊여진 물로 만들어진 커피와 미리 가열된 물을 이용한 커피 사이에는 차이가 있다는 것도 알고 있다"고 말했다.
자판기 공급업체뿐만 아니라 백색가전 제조업체나 온수탭(Hot Water Tap) 관련 기업들도 혁신을 통한 혜택을 받고자 한다. 가정에 설치된 순간온수솔루션은 고객에게 온수와 에너지를 절감하는 방안을 제공한다. 그렇지만 Duncan이 지적한 것과 같이 영국의 일반적인 가정은 샤워를 할 때 온도를 높이기 위해 매일 평균 24리터의 물을 낭비하는 것으로 나타났다. 그는 영국 가정의 물 사용량의 5%를 물의 온도를 높이는데 소비하고 있다고 설명하였다.
RAPIDHEAT 기술은 전력밀도(Power Density)가 높다. 이는 지금 현재 시장에 나와있는 기술과 비교했을 때 히터를 더 작고 가볍게 만들 수 있다는 의미이다. 이를 통해 가정과 같이 공간의 제약이 있는 장소에 유용하게 활용할 수 있다. 순간온수솔루션을 개발한 이번 컨소시엄은 먼지나 침투수로부터 히터를 보호해야 한다고 생각하고 있기 때문에 가정이나 사무실, 공장 등 다양한 환경 속에서 이 기술을 적용할 수 있다. 또 다른 장점은 히터가 미리 가열된 물을 공급하지 않기 때문에 온수보관소가 필요없다는 점이다.
즉시 대량의 온수를 생산할 수 있는 온수히터는 다양한 상업, 산업 및 공공건물 등에 필요하다. 또한 간헐적으로 대량의 온수가 필요한 제조 및 공정 산업에도 사용빈도가 높을 것이다. 이들은 온수에 대한 피크 수요(Peak Demand)가 평균 이상이거나 수요를 충족하기 위해 저장하는 온수의 열손실 비용이 높은 경우에 적용할 수 있다.
Duncan은 "이번 프로젝트를 진행하면서 시작 단계에서 연구진이 예상하지 못했던 많은 분야에 활용 가능성이 있다는 것을 알게 되었다. 그리고 이러한 기회를 어떻게 활용할 수 있는가를 논의 중이다. 추가적인 프로젝트 개발에 관심이 있거나 순간온수가 필요한 분야에 이 기술을 적용하려는 파트너들을 모색하고 있다"고 밝혔다. 이번 프로젝트는 2015년 8월 말에 공식적으로 완료되었다.
Instant water heater offers energy and cost savings
Traditional water heaters take time to reach preferred temperatures, thus wasting water and energy. A new instant hot water solution, developed through the EU-funded RAPIDHEAT project, successfully optimised heating and control technologies to develop a lightweight low thermal mass heater that provides full temperature output within two seconds of switch-on.
'Here in Britain we drink approximately 165 million cups of tea per day, along with 70 million cups of coffee,' says RAPIDHEAT project coordinator Peter Duncan from Cressall Resistors in the UK. 'That's a lot of hot drinks and a lot of hot water. Many of us rely on vending machines and those who do know the difference between a coffee that has been made with freshly boiled water and one that contains pre-heated water.'
In addition to vending machine suppliers, white goods (domestic appliance) manufacturers and hot water tap providers also stand to benefit from the innovation. An instant hot water solution installed in the home offers customers a water and energy saving solution; as Duncan points out, the average UK household wastes 24 litres of water a day waiting for the shower to heat up. 'That's five per cent of your water bill that you're pouring down the drain,' he adds.
The high power density of the RAPIDHEAT solution also means the heater is smaller and lighter than other technologies on the market, which makes it useful for applications where space is limited, such as in the home. The consortium was keen to ensure that the heater would be protected from dust and water infiltration, enabling it to be installed in a variety of environments ranging from the home to the office and the factory.
Another advantage is that by removing the need for hot water reservoirs – the heater does not use a supply of preheated water – the heater cannot run out. Water heaters capable of producing large volumes of 'instant' hot water are needed in many commercial, industrial and public buildings and also in process and manufacturing industries that have intermittent demands for large volumes of hot water. These are cases where peak demand for hot water is many times the average, and the cost of heat losses from the hot water stored to meet that demand can be significant.
'There are a number of applications that the team simply did not foresee at the outset of this project,' says Duncan. 'How we should take this opportunity forward is currently under discussion, and we are now looking for partners interested in developing the project further and integrating the technology into applications that require instant hot water.'
The project was officially completed at the end of August 2015, and the project consortium has since compiled a one-page guide explaining the space, heat and energy savings that can be made by installing the RAPIDHEAT instant hot water technology.
