[미국] WEST VIRGINIA, 2014년 화학 유출사건 합의

발표된 합의 조건에 따르면, 웨스트 버지나아 아메리카 워터와 이스트먼 화학은 2014년 유출사건으로 인해 최대 9일 동안 수돗물 없이 지내는 피해를 입은 주민들에게 총 1만5천100백만 달러를 지불할 예정이다.

월스트리트저널(The Wall Street Journal)은 이스트먼 화학이 소송을 해결하기 위해 2천500만 달러 지불에 합의한 반면, 웨스트 버지니아 아메리칸 워터는 1만2천600만 달러를 지불하는 것에 합의했다고 보도했다. 어느 회사도 유출 사고를 인정하지 않았다.

지난 2014년 1월 9일, 이스트먼 화학에 의해 제조되고 석탄 처리에 사용된 화학 혼합물인 약 1만 갤런의 Crude MCHM이 저장 탱크에서 유출되어 웨스트 버지니아 아메리칸 워터가 작동하는 찰스턴(Charleston) 식수 시스템으로 유출되었다.

연방 법원은 두 회사 모두 유출 후 적절한 대응 및 피해 완화에 실패했다고 주장했다.

AGREEMENTS REACHED IN 2014 WEST VIRGINIA CHEM SPILL

According to settlement terms made public Monday, a  total of $151 million will be paid by West Virginia American Water and Eastman Chemical Co. in response to a 2014 spill that left residents in the affected area without tap water for up to nine days. The Wall Street Journal reports that West Virginia American Water agreed to pay up to $126 million, while Eastman Chemical agreed to pay $25 million to resolve the lawsuit. Neither company has admitted fault in the spill.

On Jan. 9, 2014, an estimated 10,000 gallons of Crude MCHM, a chemical mixture manufactured by Eastman Chemical and used to process coal, leaked from a storage tank and entered Charleston's drinking water system, operated by West Virginia American Water. The chemical needed to be flushed from the pipes, resulting in a loss of service for drinking water customers in the affected area.
 
A federal lawsuit alleged that both the water company and the chemical company failed to properly prepare for and mitigate damages in the wake of the spill.
