2019년 국제담수화협회(IDA) 세계총회가 아랍에미리트(UAE) 두바이(Dubai)로 결정되었다. 

10년만에 두바이에서 2019년에서 열릴 IDA 세계총회는 총 8건의 개최 신청지 중에서 엄격한 심사과정을 거처 선정되었다. IDA는 2019년 세계총회의 개최지와 개최 장소에 대한 세부사항이 곧 발표될 것이라고 말했다.
  

IDA는 "IDA 사이트 선정위원회(Site Selection Committee)는 전세계에서 제출한 8건의 유치 신청서에 상세히 기술된 정보를 철저한 분석과 엄격하게 검토한 다음 최종 후보자 4명을 선정하여 현장 방문조사를 했다"고 밝혔다.

2년마다 열리는 국제담수화협회(IDA) 세계총회는 2009년 두바이에서 처음 개최되었으며,  2011년 호주 퍼스, 2013년 중국 천진,  2015년에는 미국 캘리포니아되었다. 2017년 세계총회는 오는 10월 15∼20일 브라질 상파울로에서 개최된다.

지금까지 국제담수화협회(IDA) 세계총회에서는 주로 담수화에 초점을 맞추었지만, 담수화가 초기 단계에 있는 브라질 총회에서는 중심의 행사를 위해 물 재사용으로 변화 신호를 보냈다.

지난 2015년 3월 리오 데자네이로에서 ‘라틴아메리카 개발을 위한 물 재사용 및 담수화 (Water Reuse and Desalination for Latin Development)’라는 주제로 개최된 컨퍼런스에서  IDA 관계자는 “2017 브라질 총회는 매우 성공적인 회의가 될 것”이라고 말했다.

오만, 사우디 아라비아, UAE와 같은 중동 국가들에서 담수화 활동이 가열됨에 따라,  2019년에 다시 중동 지역에서 IDA 세계총회를 개최하는 것은 대형 담수 설비를 수주할 기회가 될 것으로 예상돼 전세계 담수화 업계에서는 환영받을 것으로 보인다.

IDA World Congress returns to Dubai in 2019

DUBAI, UAE - Dubai has been announced as the bid winner for the International Desalination Association’s (IDA) World Congress 2019.

Returning to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after 10 years, Dubai was selected from a total of eight proposals.

The IDA said details about dates and venue for the 2019 World Congress will be announced shortly.
 
Announcing the news, the association said its “site Selection Committee conducted a rigorous review of eight proposals from around the world that included thorough analysis of information detailed on a numeric scorecard, followed by site visits to four final candidates and a vote by the IDA Board of Directors.”

The event was first held in Dubai in 2009, shortly after moving to Perth, Australia in 2011; Tianjin, China in 2013; California, US in 2015 and then Sao Paulo, Brazil later this year.

Although previous events have largely focused on desalination, the controversial move to Brazil - where desalination is in its infancy - signalled a shift in focus for the event onto water reuse.

The 2017 World Congress in Sao Paulo, Brazil will take place on October 15-20.

This follows a small event held in Rio de Janeiro in March 2015 by the IDA called “Water Reuse and Desalination for Latin American Development”, which it said was a “highly successful conference”.

With desalination activity heating back up in Middle East nations such as Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, moving the event back to the region will no doubt be welcomed by the global desalination community.
