[미국] 보몬트시, 폭풍 하비로 깨끗한 물공급 난항

텍사스주 보몬트(Beaumont)시는 열대성 폭풍 하비(Harvey)로 인해 홍수가 발생해 깨끗한 물을 공급하기 어려워졌다.

이 지역은 하비로 인한 가장 심한 타격을 입은 지역 중 하나로, 지난 주 폭풍이 육지로 상륙하면서 29인치의 비를 내렸다. 거의 12만 명의 주민들이 깨끗한 물을 이용할 수 없으며  물 공급 서비스를 회복하기 전에 수위가 약해질 때까지 기다려야 한다.

 
경찰서는 페이스북 페이지를 업데이트하여 펌프장을 수리할 때까지 수도관을 잠그고 개인 용수는 끓여서 사용하라고 주민들에게 권고했다. 긴급 물 배급센터도 도시에 설치됐다.

HARVEY: CITY OF BEAUMONT, TEXAS LOSES CLEAN WATER "INDEFINITELY" IN WAKE OF FLOOD

The city of Beaumont, Texas, has lost access to its clean water supply because of rising flood waters from tropical storm Harvey.

 
PBS reports the city's police department issued a statement, confirming it lost power at its main pump station along the Neches River and from its secondary source of well water in an adjacent county.

 
The area was one of those hardest hit by Harvey, receiving 29 inches of rain as the storm made landfall last week. Nearly 120,000 residents have lost access to clean water, and will need to wait until the water levels recede before their service will be restored.

 
In an update to their Facebook page, the police department advised residents to turn off water pipes and boil any water for personal use until the pump station can be repaired. Emergency water distribution centers have also been set up in the city.

In addition to residential customers, the water loss is also affecting healthcare sites and the local fire department, which is exploring the need for additional water tankers to be trucked in from nearby towns.
