Protech and Dow win Carlsbad contracts

Contractor and plant operator for the giant Carlsbad desalination plant under construction in California, IDE Technologies, has selected City of Vista-based Protec Arisawa to provide the pressure vessels and and Dow Water and Process Solutions to supply reverse osmosis membranes for the Carlsbad project.

Protec's fibre reinforced plastic pressure vessels will provide the Carlsbad plant with a "long-lasting and energy efficient product that is critical to the desalination process" said IDE. Dow's reverse osmosis membranes will "work hand in glove" with the Protech pressure vessels the contractor said.

Carlsbad owner, Poseidon Water, said the appointment of Protech continued its commitment to involve "as many local companies in the Carlsbad project as possible." According to Poseidon, Carlsbad will, during its three-year construction, support about 2,500 local jobs and infuse US$ 350 million into the San Diego County economy.

The US$ 1 billion, 250Ml/d project and its associated 15km pipeline are scheduled to be operational by late 2015.
