Putnam Water and Wastewater systems to be managed by Suez

SUEZ will manage the 29,000 m3 per day wastewater treatment facility, the wastewater collection system, 10 sewage pump stations and 28.6 miles of sewer main. SUEZ will also operate and maintain Putnam¡¯s water system, which includes 10 wells providing 4,300 m3 a day to the community, two storage tanks, approximately 250 fire hydrants, 750 valves and 38 miles of water main.

Tony Falzarano, the Mayor of Putnam and Jim Shaw, Chairman of the Putnam Water Pollution Control Authority, announced in mid-January that SUEZ was chosen to operate and maintain the water and sewer systems from February, 1st. The Town of Putnam is in the process of investing over $40 million in its water infrastructure and will benefit from SUEZ¡¯ management and technological expertise.

"With that type of major investment, it is imperative that we take excellent care of it," said Shaw. "SUEZ has the capability to efficiently and effectively meet all of our expectations and this partnership is a proven way to operate efficiently, ensure adequate water supplies, achieve compliance with environmental rules, enhance water service provision, and improve our water and wastewater infrastructure."

The scope of the project will include smart meter installations within the first 18 months. This technology can provide a permanent and reliable overview of the water cycle - thus ensuring a sustainable management of water resources for the community. Smart meters enable homeowners and businesses to obtain accurate and timely information, such as leak detection alerts. Marie-Ange Debon, Group Senior Executive VP in charge of International Division of SUEZ, said, "We are thrilled to partner with the Town of Putnam. The operational and environmental stewardship of SUEZ will ensure tangible benefits for the town and its residents for a very long time. Our commitment to help with the modernization of infrastructure will enable the municipality to guarantee high-quality essential services for all of its¡¯ people. This agreement also illustrates the further international expansion of the Group and specifically, in North America."
