 ‘주베일 3A 담수화 플랜트’시운전 시작…하루 60만㎥ 담수 생산 가능

인프라, 에너지, 물 분야의 지속 가능성을 위한 혁신 기술 솔루션을 적용한 스페인의 글로벌  물기업인 아벤고아(Abengoa)가 중국의 엔지니어링 및 건설업체 SEPCO III와 컨소시엄을 통해 하루 60만㎥의 담수를 생산할 수 있는 용량을 가진 ‘주베일 3A 담수화 플랜트(Jubail 3A desalination plant)’에 대한 시운전에 들어갔다.

사우디아라비아에 본사를 둔 발전 및 담수화 발전소의 개발기업이자 투자자 및 운영자인 ACWA Power가 자금을 조달한 ‘주베일 3A 담수화 플랜트’는 사우디 동부지방인 주베일(Jubail)시의 남쪽 북동부에 위치하고 있다.

‘주베일 3A 담수화 플랜트’는 이미 시운전 시작 시 테스트의 일환으로 전처리에 바닷물을 성공적으로 펌핑하기 시작했다. 이 단계가 통과되면 필요한 모든 계약 테스트뿐만 아니라 ‘주베일 3A 담수화 플랜트’는 상업적인 운영에 들어가 리야드(Riyadh), 카심(Qassim) 및 동부지방 주민 300만 명에게 식수를 공급게 된다.

특히, ‘주베일 3A 담수화 플랜트’는 태양광 발전소에서 발생하는 재생 가능 에너지로 운영되는 세계 최초이자 최대 규모다. 따라서, 이 이설은 지속 가능하고 효율적인 방식으로 식수를 생산할 것이며, 상업적인 규모로 전 세계적으로 최초의 경험이 될 것이다.

아벤고아(Abengoa)는 중국의 SEPCO III와 협력하여 ‘주베일 3A 담수화 플랜트’의 엔지니어링, 공급 및 건설을 책임져 왔다. 이 프로젝트에는 해수 집수, 펌핑, 전처리, 에너지 회수가 가능한 역삼투 시스템, 후처리, 펌핑 스테이션, 제품 저수, 폐수처리, 배출구 배출 및 태양광 발전 설비가 포함되었으며, 380/33kV 변전소 건설을 포함한 관련 전기설비가 포함되었다.

담수화 분야 세계적인 선두주자인 아벤고아(Abengoa)

이 이정표는 세계적인 담수화 프로젝트를 개발할 수 있는 아벤고아(Abengoa)의 능력을 재확인시켜 준다. 게다가, 아벤고아는 중동의 물 부문에서 성과를 계속 추가하고 있으며, 사우디 아라비아에서 하루 생산용량이 25만㎥인 슈아이바 III(Shuaibah III)와 60만㎥인 라빅3(Rabigh 3) 담수화 시설을 건설했고, 오만에서는 하루 생산용량이 11만 4천㎥인 살랄라( Salalah) 담수화 플랜트를 건설했다. 이 시설들은 모두는 현재 만족스러운 상업적 운영을 하고 있다.

Abengoa begins commissioning its second major reverse osmosis desalination plant in Saudi Arabia

- The Jubail 3A desalination plant has started pumping seawater to the pretreatment successfully as part of the tests at the start of commissioning.

- Jubail 3A will have a capacity of 600,000 m3/day, the same as Rabigh 3, the world's largest desalination plant in commercial operation using reverse osmosis technology, also developed by Abengoa.

- It will also be the world's largest desalination plant powered by solar photovoltaic renewable energy.

June 13, 2022 - Abengoa, the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the infrastructure, energy and water sectors, has started the commissioning, in consortium with the engineering and construction company SEPCOIII, of the 600,000 m3/day Jubail 3A desalination plant for the leading company in the development, investment, ownership and operation of power generation and desalinated water production plants, ACWA Power. The Jubail 3A desalination plant is located south of the city of Jubail, in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia, in the northeastern.

The Jubail 3A desalination plant has already started pumping seawater to the pretreatment successfully as part of the tests at the start of commissioning. Once this phase has been passed, as well as all required contractual tests, the Jubail 3A desalination plant will enter commercial operation and produce drinking water for an equivalent population of 3,000,000 inhabitants

Jubail 3A will be the first and largest in the world to run on renewable energy generated by a solar photovoltaic plant. Thus, the plant will produce drinking water in a sustainable and efficient way, being the first experience worldwide on a commercial scale.

As regards Abengoa's scope in the Jubail 3A desalination plant, the company has been responsible, in consortium with SEPCOIII, for the engineering, supply and construction of the plant. 

The project included seawater collection, pumping, pre-treatment, reverse osmosis system with energy recovery, post-treatment, pumping station, product water storage, effluent treatment, outfall discharge and photovoltaic solar field, as well as the associated electrical installations including the construction of a 380/33 kV electrical substation.

Abengoa, a world leader in desalination

This milestone reaffirms Abengoa's capacity to develop world-class desalination projects. Furthermore, the company continues to add achievements in the water sector in the Middle East, where it has built the Shuaibah III (250,000 m3/day) and Rabigh 3 (600,000 m3/day) desalination plants in Saudi Arabia, and Salalah (114,000 m3/day) in Oman. All of them are now in satisfactory commercial operation.

Abengoa continues to successfully advance in the development of the desalination projects it currently has in its portfolio in Saudi Arabia. It has recently completed the Rabigh 3 plant, recognized by Guinness World Records™ as the world's largest reverse osmosis technology plant built to date.

Worldwide, Abengoa leads the international desalination market with an installed capacity of three million m3/day, which will be increased to four million m3/day when the desalination projects under execution are completed.
