두바이 수전력청(Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, DEWA)은 매설된 송수관로의 누수를 감지하는 데 혁신적이고 획기적인 기술을 활용하고 있다. 이 기술을 통해 DEWA는 2023년에 2억4천300만 갤런의 물과 966만AED(약 264만 달러)를 절약했다.

DEWA의 스마트 볼(Smart Ball) 기술은 일반적으로 기존 기술로는 감지하기 어려운 누수까지 감지한다. 스마트 볼 기술은 2021년 4월부터 2023년 말까지 두바이의 송수관로에서 81건의 누수를 감지했다. 이 기술은 송수관로의 균열이 커지기 전에 발견함으로써 신속한 처리로 추가적인 물손실을 막아 운영 비용을 절감한다.

DEWA의 HE 사이드 모하메드 알 타이어(HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer) MD 겸 CEO는 “DEWA는 미래를 예측하고, 과학적인 계획을 세우며, 스마트 그리드의 원활하고 신속하며 효과적인 작동에 의존하는 최신 도구다. 이는 '두바이 통합 수자원 관리 전략 2030'에 따라 수자원의 지속 가능성을 보장한다. 우리는 획기적인 4차 산업 혁명 기술을 사용해 시설 및 서비스를 관리하기 위한 최첨단 인프라를 개발하기 위해 스마트 그리드를 활용한다. 여기에는 인공지능(AI), 드론, 블록체인 기술, 사물인터넷(IoT) 등이 포함된다. DEWA는 감시 제어 및 데이터 수집(SCADA) 시스템을 사용해 두바이의 물네트워크를 24시간 원격으로 모니터링하고 제어한다. 2023년에 DEWA는 SCADA 시스템의 세 번째 단계를 시작했다. 이는 실시간 유압 모델링, 교육 시뮬레이션 시스템 및 고급 보고 도구를 포함한 최첨단 운영 기술을 사용해 디지털 전환을 달성하려는 노력의 일환이다. 이를 통해 우리는 3천km 이상 뻗어있는 송수관로, 양수장 및 저수지를 포함해 두바이의 송수관망을 24시간 원격으로 모니터링할 수 있다. 이는 1만 개 이상의 스마트 기기를 설치함으로써 달성됐다. DEWA는 현재 물공급에 있어 DMA(District Metering Areas)을 구현하고 정기적으로 송수관망 및 주요 물공급 관련 자산을 확장하고 있다"고 말했다.

압둘라 오바이둘라(Abdullah Obaidullah) DEWA의 수도 및 토목 담당 부사장은 “스마트 볼 시스템은 고도로 민간한 음향 센서가 장착된 작은 직경의 구체로 구성돼 있으며, 송수관망에 투입돼 유량에 의해 자유롭게 이동한다. 스마트 볼은 누수로 발생하는 소리를 감지하고 독특한 특성을 가진 가스 포켓 또는 이상 현상을 식별한다. 스마트 볼이 수거되면 누수, 가스 포켓 또는 이상 현상이 발생한 위치를 정확하게 보여주는 수학적 알고리즘을 사용해 수집된 데이터가 소프트웨어에 의해 분석된다. 스마트 볼은 시속 약 3km로 송수관 내부를 자유롭게 이동하며 유량에 영향을 주지 않고 하루 35km 이상을 검사할 수 있다"고 설명했다.

DEWA는 효율성과 신뢰성 측면에서 유럽과 미국의 저명한 기업을 능가하는 경쟁력 있는 성과를 달성했다. 2022년에는 수도관망 손실이 북미 지역의 약 15%에 비해 4.5%로 감소했다.

DEWA’s Smart Ball technology saves 243 million gallons of water and AED 9.66 million in 2023

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) utilises innovation and the latest disruptive technologies in detecting leaks in the water transmission underground pipelines. This helped DEWA save 243 million gallons of water and AED 9.66 million in 2023. DEWA’s Smart Ball technology detects leaks that are usually difficult to detect using traditional techniques. Since its utilisation in April 2021 and until the end of 2023, the Smart Ball technology detected 81 leaks in the water transmission network in Dubai. This technology reduces operational expenses, as small cracks in the water transmission pipelines are treated before they increase in size and cause further water wastage.

“DEWA relies on the latest tools to anticipate the future, sound scientific planning, and seamless, swift, and effective operation of the smart grid. This ensures the sustainability of water resources in line with the Dubai Integrated Water Resource Management Strategy 2030. We utilise the smart grid to develop state-of-the-art infrastructure for managing facilities and services using disruptive and Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies. These include AI, drones, blockchain technology, Internet of Things (IoT), and more. DEWA monitors and controls the water network in Dubai remotely around the clock using the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. In 2023, DEWA launched its third phase of SCADA systems. This is part of our efforts to achieve digital transformation using state-of-the-art operational technology, which includes real-time hydraulic modelling, a training simulation system and advanced reporting tools. This enables us to monitor the water network in Dubai remotely around the clock, including the water transmission pipelines, pumping stations and reservoirs sprawling over 3,000 kilometres. This has been achieved by installing over 10,000 smart devices. DEWA is currently implementing the District Metering Areas (DMA) at the distribution level and regularly expanding the transmission network and key distribution assets,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“The Smart Ball system consists of a small diameter sphere with a highly sensitive acoustic sensor, that is inserted into the water network, where it travels freely, driven by the water flow. It detects sounds generated by leaks and identifies gas pockets or anomalies, which have unique characteristics. Once the Smart Ball is extracted, the compiled data is analysed by software using mathematical algorithms showing the precise location of leaks, gas pockets, or anomalies. The Smart Ball travels freely inside the transmission pipes at around 3 kilometres per hour and can inspect over 35 kilometres in one day without affecting the water flow,” said Abdullah Obaidullah, Executive Vice President of Water & Civil at DEWA.

DEWA has achieved competitive results that surpass prominent European and American companies in terms of efficiency and reliability. In 2022, water network losses were reduced to 4.5% compared to around 15% in North America.
