다국적 기업, 혁신적인 기술 회사 및 물 유틸리티를 통합하는 것을 목표로 하는 새로운 이니셔티브인 ‘워터 유나이티드(Water, United)’가 미국에서 발표됐다.

마이크로소프트(Microsoft), 펩시코(PepsiCo), FIDO 테크(FIDO Tech), 올드캐슬 인프라(Oldcastle Infrastructure(CRH 회사)), 워터 파운드리(Water Foundry) 및 아틀란티안 미디어(Atlantean Media)는 ‘워터 유나이티드(Water, United)' 이니셔티브 개발을 돕기 위해 협력했다.

'워터 유나이티드'는 공공 부문과 민간 부문을 통합해 세계에서 가장 스트레스를 많는 수원 중 하나인 콜로라도 강 유역의 물 행동을 가속화할 계획이다.

1조 4천 억 달러의 경제 활동과 1천600만 개의 일자리를 지원하는 것으로 추정되는 콜로라도 강은 콜로라도(Colorado), 뉴멕시코(New Mexico), 유타(Utah), 와이오밍(Wyoming), 네바다(Nevada), 애리조나(Arizona), 캘리포니아(California)를 포함한 서부 7개 주에 걸쳐 4천만 명 이상의 사람들에게 물을 공급한다.

'워터 유나이티드'의 첫 번째 프로젝트는 170만 명 이상의 사람들에게 물을 공급하는 비영리 물 유틸리티인 라스베이거스 밸리 워터 디스트릭트(Las Vegas Valley Water District, LVVWD)와 함께 진행될 예정이다.

'워터 유나이티드'는 액셔너블 인공지능(AI)을 통해 물 네트워크의 손실을 줄이는 마이크로소프트와 FIDO 테크 간의 기존 협력을 따른다. 영국 런던(London)에서 시작된 이 프로젝트는 애리조나주 피닉스(Phoenix, Arizona)와 멕시코 케레타로(Querétaro, Mexico)로 확장되고 있다.

워터 파운드리와 아틀란티안 미디어는 '워터 유나이티드'의 프로젝트 관리를 담당할 예정이다.

한편, 지난 2020년 마이크로소프트는 2030년까지 ‘워터 포지티브(Water Positive)’*를 위해 노력할 것이라고 발표했다. 이를 위해 마이크로소프트는 물 사용 강도를 낮추고, 소비하는 물보다 더 많은 물을 보충하고, 전 세계 사람들의 물 및 위생 서비스에 대한 접근성을 높이고, 물 솔루션을 확장하기 위한 혁신을 추진하고, 효과적인 물 정책을 옹호하는 5가지 핵심 과제에 초점을 맞추고 있다.

*사용한 물의 양보다 더 많이 물을 보충하겠다는 의미로 물에 관한 넷제로와 비슷한 개념.

엘리자 로버츠(Eliza Roberts) 마이크로소프트의 물 리더는 "수원을 보충하고 2030년 물 포지티브를 달성하기 위해 마이크로소프트는 물 솔루션을 확장하기 위한 혁신을 추진하는 데 집중하고 있다. 런던, 피닉스 및 케레타로 전역의 FIDO 테크와의 초기 작업에 이어 다른 주요 이해 관계자와 함께 콜로라도 강 유역의 물 손실을 줄일 수 있도록 협력하게 돼 기쁘다"라고 말했다. 

도아 로스(Doa Ross) LVWD 엔지니어링 부총지배인은 "라스베이거스 밸리 워터 디스트릭트는 물 효율성을 향상시키고 물 시스템의 신뢰성을 향상시키기 위해 지속적으로 새로운 기술과 파트너십을 활용하고 있다"라며 "LVWD의 전체 수계는 큰 물 손실이 없지만, 수계의 일부분은 사용 기간이 50~60년에 가까워지고 있으며,  LVWD는 이 파트너십을 통해 AI 기술을 활용하여  모든 고객이 노후화된 인프라를 안정적으로 유지할 수 있도록 도울 수 있길 바란다"고 말했다. 

데이비드 그랜트(David Grant) 펩시코의 글로벌 기후 및 워터 솔루션 수석 이사는 "펩시코는 pep+(PepsiCo Positive) 의제의 일환으로 2030년까지 운영에서 물 포지티브 달성을 목표로 하고 있으며, 사용하는 물보다 더 많은 물을 지역에 공급하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 위험에 처한 유역에 장기적이고 긍정적인 변화를 가져오려면 각 유역의 모든 이해 관계자는 규모, 파트너십, 혁신 및 참여에 중점을 둬야 한다. '워터 유나이티드'는 이를 달성하기 위한 시작점으로 이 이니셔티브의 일부가 될 수 있는 기회를 얻게 돼 기쁘다"고 말했다.

‘Water, United’: Connecting key players to accelerate water action across the Colorado River Basin

A new initiative aiming to unite multinationals, innovative tech companies, and water utilities has been announced in the US.

Microsoft, PepsiCo, FIDO Tech, Oldcastle Infrastructure (a CRH Company), Water Foundry and Atlantean Media have worked to help develop the ‘Water, United’ initiative.

’Water United’ plans to unite the public and private sectors to accelerate water action across the Colorado River Basin – one of the most overstressed, overallocated water sources in the world.

Estimated to support $1.4 trillion in economic activity and 16 million jobs*, the Colorado River provides water for more than 40 million people across seven Western states, including Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona and California.

The first project is planned to take place with the Las Vegas Valley Water District (LVVWD), a not-for-profit water utility that provides water to more than 1.7 million people.

‘Water, United’ follows an existing collaboration between Microsoft and FIDO Tech that is reducing water network losses through the power of actionable artificial intelligence (AI). Launched in London, United Kingdom, the project expanded to Phoenix, Arizona and then Querétaro, Mexico.

In 2020, Microsoft announced that it would be working to become water positive by 2030. To get there, the organization is focusing on five key pillars: reducing water use intensity, replenishing more water than it consumes, increasing access to water and sanitation services for people across the globe, driving innovation to scale water solutions, and advocating for effective water policy.

The World Bank estimates that as a global average, 30% of the world’s piped water is lost before it reaches the customer, most of it due to leaks and theft. In developing nations, roughly 45 million cubic metres of water are lost daily, worth over $3 billion per year**.

Water Foundry and Atlantean Media will be responsible for project management for ‘Water, United’.

Eliza Roberts, Water Lead at Microsoft, said: “To help replenish water sources and meet our 2030 water positive ambitions, we’re focused on driving innovation to scale water solutions. Following the initial work with FIDO Tech across London, Phoenix and Querétaro, we are excited to expand our collaboration to include other key stakeholders and help reduce water losses across the Colorado River Basin.”

“The Las Vegas Valley Water District continually leverages new technologies and partnerships to improve water efficiency and enhance water system reliability,” said Doa Ross, LVVWD Deputy General Manager of Engineering. “While our overall water system does not have significant water loss, some portions of our water system are approaching 50 to 60 years of service, and we are eager to utilize AI technology through this partnership to help ensure aging infrastructure remains reliable for all our customers.”
